Part 55

"When you say, those who oversaw the balance of this world, you actually mean the Old Gods."

Again the room went dead silent. Everyone turned to look at Mortis. The Revenant had his helmet on, but there was a glow within his helmet, his eyes shone out as he looked at the Lifedrinker.

Lucien was old, possibly as old or older than Mortis, the risen King of Dragonshold. But besides being just about immortal... Mortis could sense that he knew things that he was not telling everyone.

He did not think that the Lifedrinker was withholding information in order to deceive. It was merely a case of being understood or likely provoking tempers.

Lucien noded his head slowly, though it had not been a question. Merely a statement. Mortis could see that Lucien was being careful.

Behind the Lifedrinker a massive shaped strode into view, clad in an ancient style of armor. Mortis's eye flicked quickly to a few of the others and realized that the others were not able to see the armored figure.

Sure enough the massive shape moved past Lucien and he mere stared at Mortis as though there was not another massive warrior standing almost between them. The armored figure wore a helmet and Mortis could not see his face. The helmet nodded a greeting.

"I doubt that any mortal here would have known about them." Lucien said. "I am quite surprised even that you know anything about them. There were no more temples or churces dedicated to the old pantheon in this continent at that time. Some of the nations to the south were the last to hold on."

Leopold strode forward. "Our Order hails from the south. We have been worshipping a false God. The one that we were led to believe was the bringer of light was an impostor, a deity of hungry fire that wishes to burn and consume all."

Lucien nodded. "That one truly is from Beyond. I theorized that this creature started giving my former master and his... ilk some sore of idea about the possibility of their transcendence."

"So the Fiery One was not your Master or one of his kind?" Magna asked.

"Most definitely not!" Lucien scoffed. "Though there are some of them that might as well be Gods, that one of which you speak... the Avatars that you all saw at the battle at Dragonshold... that is something completely... otherworldly."

The warrior apparition cocked its head slightly then strode towards Mortis and reached out towards his head. He felt no physical contact but within a second he felt as though he had just seen the entirety of that battle all over again.

"I can see why you bear the adoration of the Knights and the common folk!" The voice said that only Mortis could hear. "You are truly the correct vessel for what comes next."

"What?" Mortis asked, looking straight at the massively armored figure. The figure touched Mortis on the arm and then vanished but there was also a feeling of something passing into him.

There had been a brief pause. "Mortis?" Magna asked. "Are you alright?"

Mortis raised his hand which was part of the arm that had just been touched. There was a faint glow to it. He wondered if he was the only one seeing this light.

He looked at Magna who was touching her nose, sniffing and looking around. The others seemed somewhat oblivious. Adrian knew. Mortis could see the way that the boy stared at his arm. He could see something that the others could not.

The moment passed. Mortis turned towards Lucien. "I believe you were explaining something about your former masters?"
