Art Talk: "The column is my religion"

One of the highlights of Frogner park in Oslo, Norway is the Monolith Plateau. On this plateau you will find The Monolith and 36 other figure groups in all stages of life surrounding the monolith.

According to the Vigeland Museum
Gustav Vigeland, the prolific artist of Frogner Park said,

The Column is My Religion

Gustav is speaking of this 46 feet (14 meter) high column he designed in 1924. It took 14 years for 3 stone carvers to transfer the 121 human figures from the clay model to the stone from a quarried in Iddeford, Norway.

This is one of my favorite. An older person with a hand on the shoulder of a young man who is looking into the future. I can sense the love and support the old peron has for this younger man as he knows he will have a lot of ups and downs in his future.

Some are in loving groups, some in a state of discord and some looking indifferent. Emotions we all feel at sometime in our lives.

There are so many different expressions of human emotion. It is no wonder that Frogner Park and these white sand stone sculptures are popular.

I highly suggest seeing these incredible sculptures in person if you are in Oslo. Gustav Vigeland also created bronze sculptures at the fountain and bridge, both in Frogner Park
