Part 92

Temolach recoiled from the dragon, he could feel the ghost-pain of his severed hand. He knew somehow that his real hand was still intact, but he was feeling the senses of his Avatar body.

Already, his outer body was healing itself. The missing hand was starting to reform. At the same time his severed hand reared up from the ground. The Avatar still held control in it!

The changeling and the lifedrinker had rallied to face him, but they jumped aside when the massive hand began scutteling towards the Avatar of Death. Temolach could feel two pains now. One in his arm and one in the severed limb as it neared. It hungered to join with his body.

The Avatar's needs and thirsts were beginning to overpower the Necromancer, he could feel the divine influence of his God as the Dark One's essence flowed into him from the void.

The Hand came near and then turned, offering its torn stub towards the Avatar. The mending hand met the severed hand and a rapid assimilation began to occur, tendrils made up of the body parts of undead humans gripped and held one another and then stitched together into one flesh.

Because the hand had already begun to reform the result was that healed hand was larger than the other. The Avatar channeled further power into this new perfection. Talons burst from its fingertips and the Avatar relished the prospect of rending its enemies to pieces with this new weapon.

The part of the Avatar that was Temolach could only smile and observe as the hunger of the Dark One took over.

The Burning One stalked through the monastary presinct. All the lovely, jealous and corrupt priests were easy to find. Their hunger for power was akin to their Lord in a way these too-holy Knights did not understand.

The Avatar gave these priests their final wish as they were consumed and their souls, flesh and energy feeding the Avatar. It grew ever taller and more muscular, more powerful.

Braziers and torches had their flames and fuel drawn towards the Burning One as well, adding their fire to its own. Then it came to the industrial sector of the City.

There were families that lived here, but even right now as the sun was starting to set and the Avatar's light shone brightly, the smithies rang with the sound of industry. The city was under siege and new arrows were being made, new shields and weapons. The Avatar delighted at the heat of the forges. It stalked towards them as the humans began to flee... they tried.

Hearth fires, forge fires, glowing metal from the forge and all the fuels that went were drawn to the Avatar's form as though it were a magnet. The Fuels and fires made it grow, the steel and iron wrapped itself on its form and became its armor.

The debris often collided with human flesh and in that instant, those so touched were also claimed by the Avatar of the Burning God. The Hunger drew it to consume more and more. Like the fires of its Lord, it was never satiated.

There were a few forges still left at the end of the street that had not been touched by the Lord's fires yet, it stalked down the street towards them. The Avatar smashed into an invisible barrier.

The Burning One roared in frustration, its bladed pole-arm lashing out and screeching along the force-field.

"Who dares?!" It roared.

In the center of the roadway, there was a lone knight, clad in black armor. There was a skull motif on the knight's livery. The knight held a sword in both hands and this blazed in cold fire. The Avatar sensed an old magic to this knight. It was death... it was unlife... but it was not the spawn of the Cold One, it was not with the unliving beyond the walls.

Then the Avatar understood the feeling that the knight gave off and it roared in laughter. "An ancient King! You are the one who would keep me from my prizes?"

"I would keep you from my descendants yes!" The knight proclaimed.

"Oh so brave!" The Avatar said and brandished his Cursed Glaive. "I will lay you low, just as I did to your forebears and their Old God."

The Knight paused. "Old God?"

The Avatar spat a gob of flame onto the street. "There is not more God. It was consumed by the Lord long ago when your line dared challenge us. I will draw you into the fires of the Lord's embrace. Perhaps we shall reforge you to become one of our champions. An angel of the flame."

"I have seen your angels." The Knight said, resolute once more. "They are beings of evil. Not angels, but demons who burn and purge."

"Those words mean nothing to me. Evil? The angels purify the corrupt and the weak! All are kindling before the Lord." The Avatar struck against the barrier again.

"I have had enough of this." The ancient King growled and swung his blade. The barrier that blocked it off from the end of the street was extended to the wall of the city. "You will not pass here and should you wish to break my barrier, you probably could. It will cost you time and energy however and you will become weak. Or follow the field to the edge of the city and feast outside. Your preferred enemy and eternal rival is there."

The Avatar's blood boiled. "Rival?! That disgusting thing is my Prey! I will rend it to pieces and cast it to the fires!"

"If you think you can." The knight taunted.

The Avatar glowered. "I'll show you! And when I am done I will be back and I will burn your precious city and all those within its walls to ash!"

The knight nodded and said nothing.
