Greetings Readers
I am finally done with the nightmare book! Now it's onto a poor editor that is going to have a terrible time trying to go through the nonsense I had to go through. But enough of that!
This is a continuation of what @zakludick left me with Part 88. I'm making the Blaze knights a little more tarnished that what people believe them to be. Enjoy!
Mortis felt the air stir around him. He knew about the monstrosity that had been born and he knew of the one that was being birthed beyond the castle. He took a deep breath, not needing it, and continued with what he had been charged to do.
He thought back to when he and Robert were standing face-to-face. Mortis hadn’t thought much of the pale man. He had judged him poorly because of how the Blaze Knights had acted, but he couldn’t have been more wrong.
Robert had managed to not only figure out Mortis’ intent but also who he was. Despite this, Robert still threatened his unlife. Mortis didn’t care. The magic floating through the air now indicated that the larger players had entered the field of combat, and no one was ready.
Mortis turned back to the ground before him. He had been placing symbols throughout the courtyard where he had found Robert. Each had meaning, and each would help them in the coming hours if not days, but he needed to complete it, and that was proving to be more difficult than he had first thought.
The spell was complex, and he struggled to recall what Adiran had told him he would have had to do. This was made worse by the crossbow woman and the dark-skinned man hovering over him. Robert had charged these two to keep a close eye on him, and they had obeyed. Every now and again, he could hear the man muttering obscenities under his breath, directed at the revenant. The woman, however, seemed to be more fascinated with what he was doing than what he looked like.
“I don’t recognise these symbols.” Exclaimed the man, “How sure are we that this thing is actually helping us.”
“This thing can hear you perfectly well standing right here.” Said Mortis with some annoyance.
“Hush Husk!” chided the woman as she continued to look over the symbols. “Everything is fine.”
“Why? Just because Robert said so? Bah! He sided with an undead. He’s no better than the people of this castle. Making deals with demons, undead, and who knows what else.”
Mortis stopped what he was doing and looked at the man, and not just looked at him, looked into his soul. The willing gift of blood from Magna had helped with many abilities the king of old had no idea he had, and as soon as he truly looked at the man, he understood.
“And what took it from you?” he asked innocently.
Husker paled and rounded on Mortis, “How dare you imply…”
“The girl is missing part of her soul too. Is this something the Blaze knights do in initiation?” Mortis turned back to the symbols, knowing his comment had caused the man to find something else to fixate on.
“Souls are currency.” Said the girl as she lowered her crossbow. “Sometimes the currency is willingly given, other times it is stolen.”
“Then you have nothing to judge me on as I am cursed with this life until I lift the curse on these lands. Help or keep out of my way.” Mortis measured out a few paces and continued to draw symbols.
“Danni, what the hell are you thinking? We don’t talk about souls as currency! It is what makes us human!” hissed Husk.
“Is that why you changed your name, Husk? Do you truly believe you are no longer human because you lost what made you human?”
“That’s not the point!”
“Excuse me?”
The new voice made the two Blaze knights turn, and they were greeted by the sight of a mage in a long, purple robe.
“And who in the hell are you?” demanded Husk.
“She is a bright mage of Hiral Kai.” Said Danni as she kept her crossbows trained on the woman.
“My name is Noxus, and I can because Robert said you two may harass this castle’s guardian.”
The two knights blushed and Mortis couldn’t help but chuckle under his breath.
“How fair you Death Knight?” called Noxus.
“I am well Mage, though I am surprised you are here. Did Adiran not tell you to get involved after what happened with the Gallapod?”
“One good turn deserves another. Adiran suspects you may have forgotten some steps. I volunteered to check.” The one-armed mage made her way around to all the symbols silently.
She nodded her head a few times and then joined Mortis, “Masterful. Would you like me to complete the rest?”
“You may assist me. Whatever happens, the backflow of magic must go through me, it is the only way to ensure no one living is affected if something goes horribly wrong.”
“Very well.”
“Why are the initiates of the Kai here?” demanded Husk.
“We seek to find comfort after losing two of our group. Redemption if you wish. We also owe our lives to this one and his companions. We never leave a debt unpaid.” Noxus looked at the two knights and tutted under her breath. “How many of you knights have had your souls rent from your body? Is this a ritual? Are they protected somewhere? Or were they forcibly removed?”
She seemed to have hit a few painful nerves because both the knights turned away with blazing faces. Noxus then turned back to Mortis, “We do not have long, sir.”
“I am painfully aware.” Mortis looked up at the sky with clouds that seemed to be going green.
WEll now, what is Mortis and Adiran planning? Who know? That's up to Zak, have fun bud!
