During 2023 the Art Talk theme is Museums. Today we are going to look at a very neat museum in Oslo, Norway. I went on my trip to Norway in September 2023 after HiveFest in Amsterdam. Knowing that I wanted to highlight museums this year I saved this post! :)
As @jarvie and I were planning our visit to Norway and Oslo specifically he talked to some friends who highly recommended this museum and I am so glad they did. It was very cool.
Let's take a look at the highlights of the Norsk Folkemuseum or- in English- The Norwegian Museum of Cultural History.
There is both a traditional inside museum and a very interesting open air museum with buildings from different times of Norway's history, starting in the 1200s with the Gol Church.
Traditional Museum
This is the area were we went inside the museum. I was so interested to see the Gol Church and the other outside buildings that I didn't stay long and only took three pictures inside.
Open Air
It was a beautiful day to wander around in the open air. According to the website there are 160 buildings.
King Oscar II's Collection
Let's start with the oldest buildings. These were collected by King Oscar the king of Norway and Sweden. He showed them at his summer residence in 1881. He gave his collection to the country and it became a part of the Norsk Folkemuseum in 1907. There four buildings the this collection and I got pictures of three of them.
The Stave Church from Gol
For me this was the building I was most interested in seeing was the stave church from 1200.
So cool.

Storehouse from Sondre Berdal
This storehouse is from the 1759 in Nesland, Norway. Nesland is up on the Lofoten Islands.
The detail in the wood of the Church and storehouse above are really incredible.
Storehouse from Rolstad
One thing that we noticed on our drive around the country is that there are many regions that have grass on the roof, like this storehouse.
This storehouse was built in the 1300s and was used as a sleeping quarters. You can see the Romanesque arches on the back left corner.
The Countryside Collection
Guesthouse from Akkerhaughen, 1800 | Farmhouse from Lende in Time, 1845 |
The Summer Dairy Farm
Bethlehem Meeting house from Hinna in Stavanger, 1876
Beautiful gardens
One of the fun things is that there were people in some of the buildings doing demonstrations.
Cost
The museum is a really great price at 180 NOK which is about $18 USD for adults and children 0-17 years old are free.
Old town
After visiting the medieval structures and the countryside collection we made our way to the more the old town buildings.
Town House from Dronnisgate 15, Christiana, 1714
A fun little photo shoot in old town
The Norsk Folkemuseum is really such a great place to wander around for hours and see and learn about how the people of Norway lived. Oh and we stopped at the waffle shop and it was really yummy.
