When was the last time you enjoyed the everyday? A few days ago I had an unexpected day off from work, and since it wasn't on my itinerary, I decided to watch one of those movies where "nothing happens" and relax for a while. The interesting thing is that as the movie went on, that was the only thought going through my mind: when was the last time I enjoyed the everyday? That I felt peace in making my bed, brushing my teeth, hanging out my clothes. Really just living. I was thinking for quite a while and the truth is I think I have a LONG time without doing that, or well, I had.

“¿Cuándo fue la última vez que disfrute de lo cotidiano? Hace unos días tuve un día libre en el trabajo que no me lo esperaba, y como no estaba en mi itinerario, decidí ver una de esas películas dónde “no pasa nada” y relajarme un buen rato. Lo interesante es que mientras la película seguía, ese era el único pensamiento que pasaba por mi mente: ¿cuándo fue la última vez que disfrute de lo cotidiano? Que sentí paz al tender mi cama, cepillarme los dientes, tender mi ropa. Realmente solo vivir. Estuve pensando un buen rato y la verdad creo que tengo MUCHO tiempo sin hacer eso, o bueno, tenía.

I'm not saying that now I enjoy the simplest things in life, but at least I'm aware of how beautiful it is to live, and all, really, because of Perfect Days. A film by Wim Wenders about the daily life of Hirayama, an old man who cleans public toilets in Japan and in his free time he spends listening to music, reading and taking pictures with a little analog camera he has. And well, I would like to say that there is more going on, but not really. It's just that, and beyond the visit of his niece or meeting a girl who also likes music (not in a loving way or anything) the movie doesn't show you more than his daily routine, and for who that can be a complete bummer, for me it ended up being an ode to life and the little things.

No digo que ahora disfrute de lo más simple de la vida, pero por lo menos estoy consciente de lo hermoso que es vivir, y todo, la verdad, por Perfect Days. Una película de Wim Wenders que va sobre el día a día de Hirayama, un señor mayor que limpia baños públicos en Japon y en su tiempo libre se dedica a escuchar música, leer y tomar fotos en una camarita analógica que tiene. Y bueno, quisiera decir que pasan más cosas, pero la verdad no. Es simplemente eso, y más allá de la visita de su sobrina o encontrarse con una chica a quien también le gusta la música (no de forma amorosa ni nada) la película no te muestra más que su rutina diaria, y para quien eso puede ser un completo fastidio, para mi terminó siendo una oda a la vida y a las pequeñas cosas.

For the same reason I understand that many people get bored, some fall asleep and others leave the movie in the middle, because it really is a boring movie. But because it is boring, it is beautiful, because sometimes life is like that. You don't need a big drama or to be always in a good mood to understand that life has many things to offer, like music, people, trees, driving, art. And well, the truth is that it can be something stubborn in the hand of almost anyone, but in the hand of the vision of Wim Wenders, great director who has made films like Paris Texas and the Wings of Desire, this film ends up being an embrace to the body and your anxiety, showing us that you don't always have to go a thousand percent.

Por lo mismo entiendo que mucha gente se aburra, algunos se duerman y otros dejen la película a la mitad, porque realmente es una película aburrida. Pero como es aburrida, es hermosa, porque a veces la vida es así. No se necesita un gran drama o estar siempre de buenas para entender que la vida tiene muchas cosas que ofrecer, cómo la música, las personas, los árboles, el manejar, el arte. Y bueno, la verdad es que puede ser algo obstinante en la mano de casi cualquier persona, pero de la mano de la visión de Wim Wenders, gran director que ha hecho películas como Paris Texas y las Alas del deseo, esta película termina siendo un abrazo al cuerpo y a tu ansiedad, mostrándonos que no siempre hay que ir al mil por ciento.

That's not to mention that, although it sounds like a game, the design of the bathrooms is incredible. I did some research, because it seemed strange to me to put so much emphasis on the bathrooms, so I found out that the film was written by Wim Wenders after being invited to Japan to a convention of public bathrooms designed by the best architects in the country.

Eso sin contar que, aunque parezca juego, el diseño de los baños es algo increíble. Investigue un poco, porque me parecía extraño hacer tanto énfasis en los baños, así que me conseguí con que la película fue escrita por Wim Wenders después de haber sido invitado a Japón a una convención de baños públicos diseñados por los mejores arquitectos del país.

Aside from this fun fact, Hirayama's performance won him the Best Actor award at last year's Cannes Film Festival and is truly deserving, as he delivers a performance that at first glance is not noticeable. He is so gorgeous and captivates so much simply by watching that you actually forget he is acting, which makes you realize that we can enjoy ourselves. We can put aside our stressful lives for a while and relax.

Fuera de este dato curioso, la actuación de Hirayama le valió el premio a mejor actor en el festival de Cannes del año pasado y realmente es total merecedora, ya que entrega una actuación que a primera instancia no se nota. Es tan precioso y cautiva tanto simplemente con mirar que realmente se te olvida que está actuando, lo que hace darte cuenta de que podemos disfrutar. Podemos dejar de lado nuestra estresante vida por un rato y descansar.
