The World Is Not Enough

At least some of us believe that the world is not enough. There's not enough space, not enough food, too many humans... If I were to specify who those "some of us" are and put a number to the amount of "some," I'd say it's the 2700 or so billionaires on the planet, some of which are actually spending some of their billions to explore the possibilities of leaving the planet...

Democracy, if it works, should result in the maximum amount of freedom, prosperity and well being for the maximum amount of people. I know not everybody agrees with this, but this is how I see it. All other proposed theories simply break down with the slightest amount of scrutiny, with anarcho-capitalism being one of the worst. However, just like freedom in anarcho-capitalism, democracy is not possible under capitalism. For democracy to work, it's not enough for people to have a say on the political side of the equation; there must be economical democracy as well. If there's not, there's no use deposing Kings and Emperors because they'll be replaced by our current absolute rulers, the insanely rich.

We now have a global socioeconomic order that's geared exclusively towards the further enrichment of those who are already too rich for their own good, let alone the good of everyone else. The ever growing gap between the rich and everyone else is always exaggerated and accentuated during times of crisis; the steady and continuous transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich always gets a boost when crisis knocks on our door. "Never waste a good crisis" is one of the rules these leaders of the fake meritocracy live by, and it so happens that we're still suffering from one of the biggest crises in living memory. Or, most of us, certainly not the 2700 billionaires.

The billionaires of this world have seen their wealth surge by more than 5.5 trillion dollar since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, according to data from Forbes. That's a gain of 68 percent, an increase that's bigger than in the 15 years prior to the pandemic! As of July 9, 2021, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are worth $212.4 and $162.8 billion respectively, a growth of 88 and 562 percent in the last 16 months; on March 18, 202, they were worth $113 and $24.6 billion... Take a look at the list with all American billionaires here. Never waste a good crisis indeed. If we taxed Bezos and Musk 99 percent, they'd still be billionaires, they'd still have more money they could spend in a lifetime. If we taxed them 2 percent, and did the same to all the other billionaires on the list, they'd still all be insanely rich and America would be able to implement all policies that have overwhelming support on both sides of the political divide, like raising the minimum wage, universal healthcare, eradicating student debt and so on. To not do it, is just criminally insane.

But it won't happen. Somehow people are stuck in the idea that these individuals deserve to be our modern Kings and Emperors. Amazon is listed as a Technology industry, which makes sense because Bezos created an online retail shop, a website... Many of the individuals listed made their money in the Finance & Investments industry; they created literally nothing of worth. Jacqueline and John Mars are listed under Food & Beverage, when they should be listed under Malnutrition & Plastic Pollution. These are the "merits" this society celebrates and rewards with riches beyond imagination. Indeed, with these people in it, the world really is not enough...
