Hit-And-Run

This is how we describe a motor accident in which the vehicle involved does not stop. For example if a car hits a bicyclist and the driver doesn't stop, that driver would be called a "hit-and-run driver." And we're about to do that to the planet...

Global warming. Climate change. It's amazing that we're still discussing if climate change if caused by humans or not. The obvious answer, backed by the overwhelming majority of scientists is yes. And the obvious thing to do is to minimize immediately the emission of greenhouse gasses to the extent that we're able to. But the discussion is useless for another reason as well; it doesn't matter one bit if global warming is caused by humans. That it's happening is a fact and the consequences will be devastating to humanity and all other life on the planet. We are the dominant species on the planet, another obvious fact, which means we're the ones most capable to mitigate the effects and causes of climate change.

The below linked video makes a great point by comparing climate change disaster to an approaching car. If you see a car approaching that's about to hit you, what do you do? Again, the answer is obvious; you'll do anything in your power to prevent that car hitting you. And you do not care if the driver is trying to hit you or if there's something wrong with the car's brakes. You do not care about anything else than survival. Transporting this analogy to how we behave under the threat of climate change disaster, we're just standing there in the middle of the road, waiting for the car to hit us.

However, the analogy with the hit-and-run driver isn't complete yet. You see, it's not you or I at the wheel of the rapidly approaching climate change car, nor is it anyone else who belongs to the proverbial 99 percent. The whole story about personal responsibility, the calls to minimize our individual "carbon footprints" is a ruse: Just 100 companies are responsible for 71% of global emissions. The engines of ocean liners and cruise ships are some of the biggest polluters: A cruise ship's emissions are the same as 1 million cars. And now Elon Musk is imagining and working on super fast rocket flights to transport passengers to any place on the globe in less than 30 or 40 minutes. Only problem is that these rockets emit much more greenhouse gasses while transporting way less passengers per flight. Completely bonkers, just like his Hyperloop: Elon Musk proposes city-to-city travel by rocket, right here on Earth.

Mass public transportation is what we need. More trains, buses and public transportation infrastructure. And it needs to be done by the government, not by for profit private companies. Our hit-and-run drivers are the corporations and their billionaire owners, and they'll do one of two things; they'll escape the planet, or, and this is more likely, they'll advocate for all polluting industries to be moved into space or the Moon, and they'll move the workers there as well while they stay on the only really habitable place in the solar system. Ever seen "The Expanse"? It's code Red people...
