Fui a un curso de barista - I went to a barista course

Hi, how are you doing? Before I tell you about what it was like to go and learn how to make coffee in an espresso machine, I would like to tell you that I work in a gourmet fast food restaurant, where they sell pizzas, hamburgers, desserts like meringues, brownies with ice cream, cinnamon rolls and many other things. My place and main job is to be the host of the restaurant and also to be the expo support, in the expo area the orders are packed, coffee is prepared, meringues, brownies are decorated as well as the rol, it is the area in charge of the drinks offered in the menu. Therefore, as expo support, I should know how this area is managed. Having said all this, now let's get down to business.

The managers and bosses of the restaurant chose me among my colleagues and offered me to take a basic barista course, to which my answer was "I would love to". I already knew how to prepare coffee as such, but I liked the idea of knowing much more and having the confidence to do things better, basically to improve my work and that in the future it would help me in other restaurants.

Well, they paid me for the course and the day I was supposed to go was September 2nd at eight in the morning I had to be there. I went to Altamira, an urbanization and a sector located in the municipality of Chacao to the east of Caracas - Venezuela, in the state of Miranda. This place I visited for a day is in an academy called Carbone Espresso, a pretty nice place with a little peculiar decoration, just entering the academy you could breathe coffee and even a chocolate aroma.

We were about twelve people who were there to receive the basic barista course and upon entering one of the rooms we were approached by a guy who works at the academy and invites us to enter another room to start the class. Upon entering we see this gentleman who says good morning and introduces himself. His name is Pietro Carbone and he is the founder of the academy or as he calls it "project" that started more than 10 years ago, trying to have a good cup of coffee. He started roasting his coffee, and teaching his friends how to prepare it better, simply to have a place to drink better coffee.

After Pietro introduced himself, it was the turn of each of us attending the course to introduce ourselves. When we had all finished, Pietro continued and began to tell us about the history of coffee and its fascinating journey around the world until it reached our lands. He has a very clear idea and was very sad about how coffee is being worked here in Venezuela because of the government.

Today Carbone Espresso is a brand of coffee beans or ground and is harvested in the state of Trujillo - Venezuela and dictates some very important courses. I went to receive the basic course. The main idea of this course is to have an eminently practical vision of the world of coffee, its process, its preparation and how to serve it. The course is quite relaxing so they prefer to develop it in one morning and what better than to be received in a place in the morning with a coffee and in a very nice place. In this case they were sips of a rather mild coffee for the first one and that in the course of the morning they would be giving us much stronger coffees.

Of course, sugar does not exist in the academy, so all the coffees they give you to taste are pure and without any sugar. As I mentioned, we were enjoying and tasting the most varied presentations of coffee, prepared by Mr. Pietro, his assistants and also by each one of us who were attending.

After Pietro told us a brief history of coffee it was time for us to learn the operation of the mill and the machine, to know the stages and how to serve the coffee in the cup. After much explanation and several questions that we asked Pietro and his assistants, they told us that it was time for us to make some espressos ourselves, obviously they were going to guide us and tell us the steps we had to do, it is incredible but any detail does matter when it comes to serving a good cup of coffee.

The time was going pretty fast, it was about noon and my body was already very caffeinated, my head was starting to hurt and I was hungry. After making many espressos, they taught us how to cream the milk, how it should be and a few shapes, such as making a heart.

I really felt lucky to be in that place and I would definitely go there again to continue learning some other techniques. I really liked Pietro's idea and vision with coffee, always defending good Venezuelan coffee, as it should be.

The course ended around two o'clock in the afternoon and I went straight back to work to tell my colleagues and bosses how it had gone, I was quite tired but at the same time enthusiastic about preparing some coffees since I had the new knowledge obtained in the course and so I demonstrated that I was able to continue with my work.

Me despido con una sola pregunta. ¿Y a ti, cómo te gusta tomar el café?.

I say goodbye with just one question: How do you like to drink your coffee?
