Hello dear Hivers!

I recently started reading the book "Can't hurt me" by David Goggins, to develop self-confidence and improve my efficiency in my work and personal projects.

In this book, the author proposes several challenges to the reader, assuring that, if he/she does them, they will become tools to strengthen him/her psychologically.

The first challenge is to tell what your "bad cards" were, that is, what negative situation life surprised you with so harshly that it marked you forever and reduced your chances of achieving your dreams.

I accepted my challenge with enthusiasm and began to write it, applying a literary tone, because I love to make all my stories sound like a story, even when they are personal chronicles. So here is it!

The first time I visited a psychologist I was made to understand that most mental problems stem from childhood traumas, from conflicts in development and upbringing.

To understand and treat my anxiety and depression problems, therefore, it was essential to examine my childhood. But there was a little problem...

I was not able to remember much of my childhood.

It is normal for people to be unable to remember their first three or four years of life. They usually begin to retain memories around age 5, when they start kindergarten.

Curiously, in my case, the blank space extended further, erasing practically everything that existed before I was 8 years old. And from then on, between the ages of 8 and 11, memories came and went with great effort, somewhat disjointed from each other and quite blurry.

Naturally, the first trauma hypothesis, the main event capable of generating anxiety and erasing my memories, had been my mother's death.

It happened 2 days after my 11th birthday. I would love to tell you the whole story, but it is too long. For now, I will summarize the aspects that may have caused me trauma:

First, my mom got sick during a vacation trip. My dad, she and I were staying at my aunt and uncle's house, which was located near the beach. When she got sick, my dad was with her in the hospital almost 24 hours a day, while I stayed with my aunt and uncle, and this went on for 2 long months.

No one informed me of her condition during that time, and at 10 years old you expect any illness to be fixable, and even more so if the one who is sick is your mom. No matter how many days she spends in the hospital, you are sure she is recovering and will be home soon to give you a hug.

That didn't happen. The day after my birthday they took me to see her. Or rather, to say goodbye, although I had no idea that it was the last time I would see her alive. My mom was already very serious, swollen, with her eyes bulging out of her head.

It tore me apart on the inside. They told me to talk to her, to say hello, but I couldn't get over the shock of seeing her like that, almost unrecognizable, so I sat down next to her and just took her hand.

And she squeezed it. She squeezed it and looked at me with her eyes wide open, and at the same time very worried. She looked at me, and her eyes told me that she knew it was the last time she was seeing her little girl. But I couldn't accept that.

I held back the tears behind a painful lump in my throat and left with my head held high, because I felt that to cry for her was to accept that she could die.

I insist. At 11 years old, in my mind, losing my mom was not a possible equation.

And yet, the next day, my mother had passed away.

My dad didn't have the courage to give me the full news. He knew he had failed to inform me of her situation all this time. He prepared me for the bad news, hugged me as I dissolved into tears, and then left me alone to go make funeral preparations, and moments later I learned of my mother's death from my aunt.

From then on, the equation of death became a constant in my head.

We are all at risk of dying, all the time, that's a reality, but imagine if at 11 years old you start living your life as if every day was the last day of your life, as if every day was the last day you see your loved ones... I wanted to be perfect, I wanted to be permanently happy, and I wanted to please everyone. And that's definitely not healthy.

I adopted an attitude that I could move on and that everything was okay. I didn't cry to my mom other than the first day, and then a little when I got home from the trip. And no more.

I decided that this was life, and that crying was useless, and that I had to be strong, not knowing that by doing that I was eating myself up inside, not knowing that in order to be able to move on without the pain, without missing her, I was suppressing in the deepest part of my mind all the memories I had with my mom.

It seemed normal and acceptable to everyone that an eleven-year-old girl decided not to cry or talk about her mother's death and became obsessed with studying. It never occurred to anyone that this was a symptom of trauma.

My dad did see a psychologist several times, but it didn't work very well for him. He was always too proud to accept his problems, and he also transformed them into perfectionism. He started to put on me many of the responsibilities that my mom used to have: cleaning, ironing, cooking, washing dishes... And he demanded that I do them with efficiency, perfection and motivation.

After fighting with him many times without either of us facing the root of the problem, I learned to be perfect. I became obsessed with being perfect in class, being the perfect homemaker, being a perfect daughter to my dad, and being a perfect aunt to my nieces and nephews.

And that's when my anxiety disorder worsened.

It got worse, yes, because it wasn't born from there.

My anxiety disorder was not born out of my dad's pressure or my mom's death.

I remember clearly throwing up in the 4th grade classroom because of anxiety, I remember my mom giving me sugar water at the grocery store because my anxiety had lowered my blood pressure, I remember my mom leaving Christmas lights on in my room at night to reduce my anxiety.

Where did it come from? I wondered.

But how could I know? My childhood was erased, my memories were so few...

Although I was frustrated that I didn't have its origin, I probably would have given up if I hadn't had this clue: It had to do with my sexuality.

Me preguntaba.

Pero, ¿cómo saberlo? Si mi infancia estaba borrada, si mis recuerdos eran tan pocos...
