Hello everyone... Today I bring you a review of one of the most interesting horror video game developers from the year 2000 to the present day and that is Puppet Combo.
Puppet Combo is a one man video game studio, Ben Cocuzza. He is the mastermind behind each of the video games. At first, it was called Pig Farmer Productions, but then it was changed to Puppet Combo. As it says on their website (where you can buy all their products) this production house is home to psychopaths, madmen, masked killers and maniacs. All in a VHS style.
Hola a todos... El día de hoy les traigo una reseña sobre uno de los desarrolladores de videojuegos de terror más interesantes desde el año 2000 hasta la actualidad y se trata pues de Puppet Combo.
Puppet Combo es un estudio de videojuegos, de un solo hombre, Ben Cocuzza. Es la cabeza maestra detrás de cada uno de los videojuegos. En un inicio, se llamaba de Pig Farmer Productions, pero luego se cambió a Puppet Combo. Tal y como reza en su página web (donde se pueden adquirir todos sus productos) esta casa productora es el hogar de psicópatas, locos, asesinos enmascarados y maniáticos. Todos bajo un estilo a lo VHS.
Ben Cocuzza/Puppet Combo
Ben states that his inspiration is directly influenced by the movies that gave birth to the Slasher genre, masked killers, such as "The Texas Massacre" (1974) and "Halloween" (1978). For the latter film he develops a game that he wanted to title under the same name, "Halloween" and "Halloween 2", but obviously due to copyright problems that was not possible, so he had to register it under another name; "Babysitter Bloodbath" (2013) and "Sanitarium Massacre" (2012). The first one can be considered as the author's opera prima. It clearly has a John Carpenter style, with a killer in a mask who stalks the protagonist of the story (the babysitter) and without cause decides to murder everyone he comes across. Michael Myers becomes Neokalus Burnn. At this point it is important to mention that although Puppet Combo seems to plagiarize these movies, you can see that his personal style changes it completely. Besides, it is a tribute to all these movies. And if this is not entirely clear, just take a look at the entire repertoire of games and notice the differences.
Each game is about a protagonist who gets into some very bad situation and must confront a most colorful psychopath. To get out of it he must usually solve such a situation. To his regret, this one must face each killer with nothing in his hands. That is, you can only run away and hide, you do not always have weapons. The protagonist will always feel vulnerable and paranoid, which increases the level of difficulty of the game by being at a disadvantage.
Ben afirma que su inspiración está directamente influenciada por las películas que dieron origen al género Slasher, asesinos enmascarados, tales como; The Texas Massacre" (1974) y "Halloween" (1978). Para esta última película desarrolla un juego al que quiso titular bajo el mismo nombre, "Halloween" y "Halloween 2", pero obviamente por problemas de derecho de autor eso no fue posible, por lo cual tuvo que registrarlo con otro nombre; "Babysitter Bloodbath" (2013) y "Sanitarium Massacre" (2012). El primero, puede considerarse como la opera prima del autor. Posee claramente un estilo a lo John Carpenter, con un asesino con máscara que acecha a la protagonista de la historia (la niñera) y que sin causa alguna decide asesinar a todo aquel con que se cruza. Michael Myers pasa a ser Neokalus Burnn. Para este punto es importante mencionar que aunque Puppet Combo pareciera plagiar estas películas, se nota que su estilo personal lo cambia totalmente. Además de que es un homenaje a todas estas películas. Y si esto no queda del todo claro, solo basta con echar un vistazo a todo el repertorio de juegos y notar las diferencias.
Cada juego se trata sobre un protagonista que se inmiscuye en alguna muy mala situación y debe enfrentarse a un psicópata de lo más pintoresco. Para salir de ello debe usualmente resolver tal situación. Para su pesar, este debe enfrentarse a cada asesino sin nada en las manos. Es decir, solo puedes huir y ocultarte, no siempre posees armas. El protagonista siempre a de sentirse vulnerable y paranoico, por lo cual aumenta el nivel de dificultad del juego al estar en desventaja.

What Puppet Combo loves the most is the atmosphere and aesthetics of the games. With a retro style and the use of VHS-like filters, they totally distinguish their work from others, it's their personal seal. When you play something from Puppet Combo, you know it, you can notice that the atmosphere is charged by a soundtrack that uses synthesizers (something very eighties) and a rhythm like "Halloween", "Friday the 13th", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", among others. The typical horror movie beep. Besides all the locations drawn give the impression of being really immersed in that era, from wooden houses with little lighting to tall buildings of bad omen, characters with fluffy hairstyles and plenty of hairspray, dressed in flared pants and turtleneck sweaters, interiors with analog televisions, telephones and cameras, as well as old stoves and household appliances from those years. And not least, each killer has a truly disturbing appearance being characteristically tall, strong, with a gun in hand and mask, almost always dressed in overalls. The detail in every corner, is something that makes you really enjoy every game.
It is really fascinating to know that despite the fact that what rules nowadays are video games with modern graphics, Puppet Combo achieves a lot with very little. It doesn't need opulence to give you a good scare. Don't underestimate it, its pixelated killers will be able to generate a good load of adrenaline and horror, plus the games are not easy. So for me, it makes it one of the best video game developers to have an original proposal, it is a different paradigm to everything we can find in terms of horror games. It is worth giving it a chance, I can assure you that if you are a lover of old horror movies, you will like it. Lo que más encanta de Puppet Combo es la atmósfera y la estética que tienen los juegos. Con un estilo retro y la utilización de filtros a lo VHS, distinguen totalmente su trabajo de otros, es su sello personal. Cuando juegas algo de Puppet Combo, lo sabes, puedes notar que el ambiente está cargado por una banda sonora que utiliza sintetizadores (algo muy ochentero) y un ritmo a lo "Halloween", "Viernes 13", "Masacre de Texas", entre otros. El típico bip de película de terror. Además de que toda la locación dibujada dan la impresión de estar realmente sumergido en aquella época, desde casas de madera con poca iluminación a edificios altos de mal agüero, personajes con peinados esponjosos y bastante laca, vestidos con pantalones acampanados y suéteres de cuello alto, interiores con televisores, telefonos y cámaras analógicos, así como viejas estufas y carcachas de electrodomésticos de por aquellos años. Y no menos importante, cada asesino tiene un aspecto realmente perturbador siendo característicamente altos, fuertes, con un arma en mano y máscara, casi siempre vestidos con overoles. El detalle en cada esquina, es algo que hace que disfrutes muchísimo de cada juego.
Es realmente fascinante saber que a pesar de que lo que rige en la actualidad son los videojuegos con gráficas modernas, Puppet Combo logra mucho con muy poco. No necesita de la opulencia para poder darte un buen susto. No lo subestimes, sus asesinos pixeleados serán capaces de generarte una buena carga de adrenalina y horror, además de que los juegos no son fáciles. Por lo cual para mi, lo hace uno de los mejores desarrolladores de videojuegos al tener una propuesta original, es un paradigma diferente a todo lo que podemos encontrar en cuanto a juegos de terror. Vale la pena darle la oportunidad, te puedo asegurar que si eres un amante de las películas de terror antiguas, te va a gustar.
