“Du bist ein Mann, reiß dich zusammen! Sei stark!

Usw. blablabla

Fuck. Was hatte ich tun MÜSSEN?

Vulnerability and Business go together?

"You're a man, pull yourself together! Be strong! You're an athlete and an entrepreneur. Being vulnerable is for girls. That kind of thing is not an authentic man, let alone an entrepreneur."

Far too often I heard that I MUST work. I heard it from friends, colleagues, fellow campaigners, or even family.

Just because I'm a man doesn't mean I have to function. I am a human being first and foremost. A human being with feelings, dreams, desires, strengths and weaknesses, talents and abilities.

👉 I am: Human.

Part of that being is that I am an entrepreneur, with a past that has shaped it. To live for me is to make an evolution, to try things and ways, to fail, and to learn even more.

👉 For me, living means being allowed to be human - and not having to be.

When I was trying to take my life I kept having this thought:
"Mike, you HAVE to. You HAVE to make it work. You have to be this way to be liked." Etc. blah blah blah.

In the end I was standing at a bridge, had lots of alcohol in my blood and swallowed some kind of pain pills. Tears stuck to my cheek as salty residue. I felt empty, burnt out, destroyed, full of self-loathing, lonely and detached from being human. Oh God, how I cursed having feelings. I hated being so "weak." I took a running start, hopped over the railing and fell. Black, cold, hard and wet: that's how I landed. In the middle of the Mur (Graz). That was a February evening, a few years ago. Cold as hell.

I was panicking, didn't know what to do. The feeling for my body left me, the cold faded away, it became dark. It was a darkness that had a stranglehold on me and gave a warmth that I almost accepted.

In the end I was lucky, damn lucky, because the current somehow washed me ashore: No cell phone, no keys, lacerations, clothes torn and soaked. Fuck. What had I HAD to do?

Vulnerability is human. It is a gift that we are allowed to accept because it gifts us with gratitude that allows us to BE. It makes us more authentic, more honest, more approachable. And whether one is an entrepreneur or a man, we are allowed to be as we were, as we are and as we will be. We are human beings and we are the authors of our own story.

For more #humanity in #business
