A few days ago, services using the main SteemIt RPC node to communicate with the blockchain experienced technical difficulties when the server went down. This caused widespread outages, delayed information, or altogether disruption of service.

Isn't the STEEM blockchain decentralized?

Yes, the STEEM blockchain is, in fact, decentralized in nature. However, in order for the blockchain to remain available, many servers need to run around the globe that verify blocks or present an API endpoint that services can use. The amount of resources required by these servers grows by the day. As the STEEM network grows and more and more users begin to use the service, it will cost system administrators more money to keep things going.

What can be done?

Companies, or individuals, with the means can help the entire STEEM network by providing more full RPC nodes and seed nodes. For the average user, they do not have to worry about the technical details involved with the server management and ensuring full time access to services. However, it is important to remember that people are spending money out of pocket to make the STEEM network that you and I love so much. If you want, you can donate or simply upvote and resteem this post. If you choose to donate by sending STEEM, make sure to include a comment in the memo that it is to support the RPC node. At the end of the month, and in the case of any donations, a portion will go into server costs and a portion will go to a STEEM based charity.

Who is behind this?

The server is managed and operated by @netuoso with backing support from @reggaemuffin and all of @buildteam. @minnowbooster, @steemsports, @steemvoter (and more) are all going to utilize this RPC node for their own services offered on the STEEM blockchain.
