Will Steem Tokens Make A Comeback?

Steem tokens have taken a backseat with the Steem project lately with only a handful of "communities" that have their own front-end sites but have lost a great deal of their actual community. Most tokens on the second-layer chain are essentially ghosts with some users who still use the tokens in the Steem Engine. Their popularity has become a faint whisper lately but will they make any sort of comeback in the next few months or year?

It's really hard to tell since there hasn't been any major public announcements about any hot projects or communities starting up with tokens. Some of the token owners of the current communities are either inactive in their own communities or have moved on to a different blockchain (such as Hive). Many users on Steem currently are unaware of the token system and if they are aware of it, there isn't enough volume on the markets to keep some of these communities afloat. If people used the token system more, I think it would increase the volume of the trades for many of these tokens which may help generate some value for some of these communities.
