Wear your Hash gear in public: Sure fire way to make new friends

There are no official tallies on how many Hash House Harriers members there are in the world but when you consider that there are over 5000 chapters, most with a hundred members or more, there is a really good chance that you are going to encounter another Hasher no matter where you are in the world.

This happened with us recently at a random establishment we were visiting outside of our own city. Some guy was wearing a Hash shirt and when this happens, if you are a Hasher, you can be guaranteed that you are probably going to have some stories to tell one another and most likely will get along with that person.

We were visiting a random city in Isaan (the North East of Thailand) and went into the only foreigner bar in the area along with our friend that lives there. Out here in the middle of basically nowhere people don't really pay much attention to the nationwide closure of bars so of course, this one was open.

This random guy was in the bar and was wearing a Hash shirt and it made me a little disappointed that I wasn't wearing any of mine (I have dozens) because it is kind of like an announcement anywhere that you go that you are a part of this not-so-secret club that has millions of members all over the world.

We were immediately able to start up a conversation with this fella and this has been true in many other places around the world. Your Hash gear is kind of like a uniform of sorts that shows that you are almost certainly going to get along with someone else that is wearing their Hash shirt... It just kind of works that way since the members of the Hash House Harriers on a global scale seem to be a certain type of individual and I have only met a few of them globally that I didn't immediately get along with.

The reason for this is quite simple: We are a fun-loving bunch and by wearing the "uniform" you get to skip all the small talk and don't really even need a reason to introduce yourself. Every Hasher has tons of Hash stories and we all love it. Therefore, it's kind of like a code that you are obligated to look to any person wearing Hash House Harriers gear as if they were a lifelong friend.

It just kind of works that way and it is awesome that it does.

So for all you people out there that have not join in the Hash action yet, I strongly encourage you to do so as soon as possible. No matter where you are in the world, there is a very good chance that there is a Hash chapter nearby you. You'll make lifelong friends, I guarantee it!
