Vermont Adventures Part 4

Todays post is an update of the last few weeks and what we have been up to here in Vermont. The weather has been mostly wet.... too wet really for some of our veg. We've had to deal with a lot of slugs around the garden nibbling away at all our vegetables. It has been tough to find the right time to get out and weed as well with it being so wet! Still it has been a blessing for some of the trees we've got planted down in the field that are difficult to water and many of the more established plants have been loving it!

Here's a few pics of what's been happening in the garden- if you saw any of my previous posts you'll notice how much the squash and tomatoes are BOOMING!

Down in the field we are starting to get the midsummer berries like blueberries and blackberries ripening. One of our favorite parts of our morning walks is picking the days batch of berries as they ripen! We snack on some as we pick them and then gather up the rest for jams and to freeze or eat with lunch!

This particular bush always ripens first. The other 4 have a couple of weeks to go yet before they are ready.

A couple of cheeky riverbank blackberries. There are blackberries all along the path that runs around the edge of the field but these few canes on the riverbank always seem to ripen soonest! There will be plenty more in the coming weeks 😁 The best part of the blackberries is that we haven't planted any of them. They were here when we moved in and have continued to spread and thrive on their own.

APPLES! The big apple tree up by the house is already laden with apples. They aren't ready yet but it looks like it will be a good year. The crab apple trees in the field are all heavily weighed down with fruit as well!

As you can see in all of these it has been cloudy and wet pretty consistently! We have still been enjoying ourselves outside even when it's been raining on us though. I try to be pretty hands off with most of the plants in the field and the garden. I trust the plants resilience and so I don't worry too much about weeding regularly or managing the areas around the beds- especially with weather like we've been getting!

Yesterday it rained continuously all day and we got soaked through our rain gear on our walk so we decided to head to the ECHO Science Museum on Lake Champlain. We enjoyed all the science exhibits and experiments- Sky had a blast! We even found a nice outdoor perch to watch a little bit of live music and look out over the lake while we listened and had a snack with our masks off. We didn't get many pictures of the aquarium and exhibits inside- we were too busy exploring!
