Adiyogi & 7 Sages : Bringing Science to Life

It was very surprising to see the growth of yoga all around the world. A few years ago, hardly anyone knows about the Vedic status of Yoga but suddenly we have seen its rises across everywhere. Today everyone wants to be fit and they found a solution in Yoga, originated in India and have special mention in our Vedas.

People taken the yogic route by storm and every morning they wants to start the day by doing Yoga.

Ever wondered how yoga was started ??

Even I never knew when actually Yoga was introduced into the world or when it was started to be in practice. But I do found some mention while I was studying about Lord Shiva.

ADIYOGI one of the famous Avatar that exists around 15000 years ago does have many references of mastering Yoga. ADIYOGI means first yogi (Adi= First, Yogi= who performs yoga). The Pashupati Seal found from the pre-Vedic period , (Indus valley civilisation) shows a figure sitting in a lotus posture. Many scholars refered that figurines to be an Avatar of Shiva.

In the yogic culture, Shiva is not known as a god, but as the Adiyogi or the first yogi – the originator of yoga. He was the one who first put this seed into the human mind.

It was very fascinating to.see how the entire world started to recognise Yoga and slowly adapting to it. It was said that, ADIYOGI told his seven disciples to preserve the integrity of the seed of yoga. He must have envisioned a planet that would turn collectively to the science. "When the weather is right, it will happen." And today's, the weather seems to be perfect and right in many ways. Whether today's, the people practice Yoga or not, but globally people are very much familiar of the age old practice and know the benefit of the science behind it.

This could well be the begining of the era, that ADIYOGI envisaged thousands of years ago. May be ADIYOGI does not belong to past for completelly belongs to the future.

It was his teaching to the seven sages that spread the knowledge of Yoga science. The seven sages that got the teaching during the Satyuga were

  • Gautama
  • Bharadvaja
  • Jamadagni
  • Vashistha
  • Kashyapa
  • Atri
  • Bhrigu.

These 7 sages later came to be known as Saptrishi (sapt=seven, rishi=sages) Out of the 7 Sapta Rishis, Agastya Muni has been very influential in terms of bringing the spiritual yoga process into practical life, not as a teaching, philosophy or a practice, but as life itself.

It was not easy to convince ADIYOGI to share the teaching to the seven rishis. It took many years when ADIYOGI was convinced to share his knowledge to the seven Rishi. Looking at the interest and dedication of the seven Rishi, Adiyogi decided to share the knowledge and during one of the Full Moon days, The Adiyogi decided to transformed himself into the Adi Guru; the first Guru was born on that day which is today known as Guru Purnima.

We must be thankful to our culture and tradition that preseve the Vedic science till now. The time is right, the weather is right and the seed is strong that saw the great influence of Yoga all around the globe.

By sharing the knowledge here, I am not putting up a question mark on the history of Yoga, but knowing about our past is always better that keep us alive and kept us rooted to the age old tradition.
