I have a new strategy for improving my Portugues - it is thinking in Portugues.
More specifically there are three things I do:
- I talk to myself in Portuguese when I do something.
- I imagine what conversations I might have with people, this is really basic!
- I think back to what I have done and translate that into Portuguese
The three strategies correspond very generally to present, future and past tenses, so I get to practice the tenses too.
Yes, I now talk to myself a lot!
And to be honest, this is all I've got, I don't generally like talking to people in English, this is not different in a foreign language.
Of course I also try and listen to as much Portugues as possible. I am starting to pick up more and more words on the radio every day so I am getting somewhere.
Talking to myself in Portugese as I do things
This is mainly to do with mundane tasks. I force myself to translate what I am doing to Portuguese.
There are several examples.
- I am putting the coffee in the milk - Estou a colocar o café no leite.
- I need to brush my teeth - Eu preciso escovar meus dentes
- I am going to the shop. I need to buy bread, apples, cheese, and so on. - Vou à loja. Preciso comprar pão, maçãs, queijo e assim por diante.
- I am sharpening the chain on my chainsaw. It is a battery operated chainsaw - Estou a afiander a corrente da minha motosserra. É uma motosserra operada por bateria.
A quick note on the present continuous in European Portuguese - it is different to Brazilian. Google translate will give you 'Estou clocdando' for 'I am putting' but in European it's actually Estou a and the the infinitive.
Actually looking at the last couple of translations, I think they might be slightly different in European Portugues too, something to check for later!
It's the most significant difference I've seen so far!
All of this might sound painful, and it is. But doing this slowly and consciously has helped!
Pre-emptive conversations
My new neighbours in Penamacor seem very friendly. But I cannot have a conversation with them because I don't know enough Portugues.
So I've hit on the strategy of memorising a few stock phrases to tell them something about me, what I'm doing every day and what my plans are here...
- Esta tarde vou visitar um amigo em Alpredhina
- Eu estou a tentar pensar em Portuguese/ Eu tento pensar em portuguese. Deve me ajudar a aprender.
- Na inglaterra, Trabalhei como professor por vinte anos.
- Antes de qualquer coisa, tento dizer o que estou a fazer em português. Eu falo muito comigo mesmo.
- (Esta Tarde/ Hoje) Vou aprender um pouco de portugues
- Vou fazer algum trabalho online.
- Provavelmente passo muito tempo online!
- Eu não saio muito. Eu nunca saía muito quando morava na Inglaterra.
- Eu trabalho online e tenho muito trabalho a fazer no momento.
- Eu gosto muito de Bitcoin. Estou a esperar uma grande bomba em breve.

Reflecting back on past events
This is a new one - just thinking back over what I did in the previous day.....as you can see I have a life muito exciting!
Fui até Alpredinha hoje. Choveu muito forte no caminho. Limpa-vidros na configuração máxima, dirigindo na metade da velocidade normal porque eu não conseguia ver muito bem.
Fiquei muito molhado ao caminhar do meu carro até o correio. O principal motivo foi que eu esqueci minha máscara e tive que voltar ao carro para pegá-la!
Em seguida, dirigi até o Fundao e comprei um pouco de comida e um kit de conserto de furos.
Eu tenho outro furo lento. Eu tive que encher meu pneu na chuva. Felizmente foi OK para a viagem de volta de 30 milhas. Portanto, deve ser uma punção muito lenta. Provavelmente outro prego.
Também visitei um amigo e conversamos sobre criptografia por algumas horas. Foi divertido.
Depois voltei para casa, bebi cerveja e passei algumas horas no Discord, depois fui para a cama.

Yesterday was unusual, I went out and socialised, usually I just stay in and do the same things every day, so after another week of this repetition should mean I can say a very limited range of things relevant to my extremely narrow life very well!
