[Review] Hades, the GAME of the YEAR 2020

Hades

This is one of the games I enjoy. A little about myself is that I like dungeon crawler, rouge-like, and indie games. I do play Singleplayer story based games but sometimes I got bored doing so. Hades is an action pack, fast paced games that tickles my fancy. The artstyle and soundtrack is amazing that you wouldn't notice the time playing this game.

I have 21 hours of playtime in my account. This seems pretty low in making a review but I will assure you this game is a work of art. There is so many things to do in the game, you can customize the map by earning tokens that you can buy stuffs with, you will get a wide variety of weapons as you play longer and this different weapons have powerups that is different form the original like when you unlocked the shield you will have a different playstyle compared to using a sword.

The game also gain a ton of awards. It got a 93 over 100 in Metacritic and is nominated for the GAME OF THE YEAR of 2020 in "The Game Awards". Hades getting nominated GOTY of 2020 says a lot on how amazing it is. Let me paint you a picture. The competitors of Hades for the game of the year in 2020 are THE LAST OF US PART II, ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS, GHOST OF TSUSHIMA, FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, and DOOM ETERNAL. These are big companies competing for the title Game of the Year and Hades is a part of that selection. Not bad for an indie game against big companies like Nintendo, Bathesda, and SquareEnix. I didn't play those games except Hades because first of all I don't have Nintendo consoles and a PlayStation, and secondly those games cost a ton. Hades have a cheap price and is consumer friendly. Maybe that is why it captures the hearts of gamers, low price and a good game is appreciated by gamers like me. Even though it didn't win the GOTY of TheGameAwards, as you can see on the image it is the Game of the Year for most gamers.

Story

First of all, I didn't finished the story yet but the main plot is that you are Zagreus, the son of Hades and you are trying to get out of hell and see your birthmother. Oh, by the way this game is based on Greek mythology. I don't really know if it is based on a real story from the Greeks but characters in the game are Greek gods and characters from the books. in the game you are trying to get out in hell moving through different areas: Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium, and the Temple of Styx. I'm not trying to spoil anything but the final boss is Hades, your father.

Gameplay

This game is a rouge lite, dungeon crawler with an amazing graphics and soundtrack. It is played on a top down view, like a birds eye view. This game is like a bullet hell game because enemies are different and their attacks and patterns can be hard for those who are new to these type of games. It may be hard for those who are new but as you play the game you will get better and better by improving your skills and because of the rewards you will get every run. Also, every death is valuable and every restart is rewarding, this is because you will progress the story when you die. When you die you will go back to the lobby/hub of hell where you can interact with the characters like Hades, Nyx, and my favorite Cerberus.

There is also a ton of weapons you can get and play around with. That is why the gameplay wouldn't get stale and boring. There is a sword, a spear, a shield, a bow, a glove, and Gatling gun... I think. There is also upgrades that make each weapons' different from the base weapons.

As you progress the dungeon there will be shops and breathing rooms that you can stay at. You can buy items like maximum health, upgrade abilities, get more abilities form gods, and many more. The shop keeper there is Charon, the ferry man of hell and in order to buy his goods you will need Charon's Obol.

After beating a boss in a level they will give you items that can upgrade your hub and hell.

Lets play

If you want to see the gameplay of the game you can see it here or just visit the blog I did in Hive gaming. Click here and see the 3speak video. Note: I don't have commentary in the video because the storm here is loud and will just ruin the video. I'll try to do some gameplay commentary if the community wants it.
