The Taj Mahal, an enormous mausoleum of white marble built in Agra between 1631 and 1648 by order of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favourite wife, is India's jewel of art and one of the world's most admired masterpieces.

The Taj Mahal is situated on the right bank of the Yamuna River in a vast Mughal garden that spans nearly 17 hectares in the Agra district of Uttar Pradesh. It was built in memory of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan's wife Mumtaz, with construction beginning in 1632 AD and finishing in 1648 AD, with the mosque, guest house, and main gateway on the south, and the outer courtyard and its cloisters added later and completed in 1653 AD.

During the two centuries following Shah Jahan's death, the Taj Mahal suffered from neglect and disrepair as Mughal power crumbled. Lord Curzon, the British viceroy of India, ordered a major restoration of the mausoleum complex near the turn of the nineteenth century as part of a colonial effort to preserve India's artistic and cultural heritage. Here are some pics of Taj Mahal.
