Altamura is located within the large national nature park, the Alta Murgia Park. It is a city with a historic center very rich in works of art and structures from almost a millennium ago. The Cathedral is the example par excellence: built in the thirteenth century, it was followed in the Romanesque style, then use of the white stone of the area and sober features also inside the Church.
Altamura si trova all'interno del grande parco naturale nazionale, il Parco dell'Alta Murgia. È una città con un centro storico ricchissimo di opere d'arte e strutture di quasi un millennio fa. La Cattedrale è l'esempio per eccellenza: edificata nel XIII secolo, fu seguita in stile romanico, poi uso della pietra bianca della zona e sobrietà anche all'interno della Chiesa.
The construction was commissioned by King Frederick II, the author of castles and other monuments throughout Southern Italy, including the renowned Castel del Monte in Andria. Around the Cathedral of the Assumption, the inhabited area of the city has developed, now become the historic center, and retains the name of the village, since it is inhabited by hundreds of people. The village is characterized by many small alleys, whose access is often represented by a stone arch, a sign of how important the inhabited center was considered.
La costruzione fu voluta dal re Federico II, autore di castelli e altri monumenti in tutto il Sud Italia, tra cui il rinomato Castel del Monte ad Andria. Attorno alla Cattedrale dell'Assunta si è sviluppato l'abitato della città, oggi divenuto centro storico, e conserva il nome del paese, poiché è abitato da centinaia di persone. Il borgo è caratterizzato da tanti piccoli vicoli, il cui accesso è spesso rappresentato da un arco in pietra, segno di quanto fosse importante il centro abitato.
The historic buildings of the city are extremely well preserved, thanks to the continuous maintenance adopted over time by the various owners, up to the current one. Many of these buildings, albeit private, host exhibitions and small shows, so that tourists and not only can admire the majesty of the entrance halls and the mighty structure. Decorated capitals, decorations, well-defined stone arches, decorative elements or representative elements such as the coats of arms of the most important families of the city, are displayed in the alleys of the historic center, in an absolutely free and accessible way for all visitors. Altamura represents a bit of an open museum from this point of view and it is not easy to pay attention to many small details that could even escape an eye not accustomed to the deep knowledge of the Altamura land.
Gli edifici storici della città sono estremamente ben conservati, grazie alla continua manutenzione adottata nel tempo dai vari proprietari, fino a quella attuale. Molti di questi edifici, seppur privati, ospitano mostre e piccoli spettacoli, affinché i turisti e non solo possano ammirare la maestosità degli androni e la poderosa struttura. Capitelli decorati, decorazioni, archi in pietra ben definiti, elementi di decoro io di rappresentanza come gli stemmi delle casate più importanti della città, sono esposti nei vicoli del cento storico, in modo assolutamente libero e fruibile per tutti i visitatori. Altamura rappresenta un pò un museo aperto da questo punto di vista e non è facile prestare attenzione a molti piccoli dettagli che potrebbero persino sfuggire ad un occhio non avvezzo alla profonda conoscenza della terra altamurana
Squares are the main places where people used to meet to exchange goods, do business or simply talk. This tradition has remained unchanged over time and immense gathering spaces, such as Piazza Duomo, are the demonstration of how important aggregation and socialization is, especially in small towns such as Altamura where all the inhabitants know each other, forming a large family. Le piazze sono i luoghi principali in cui le persone si incontravano per scambiare merci, fare affari o semplicemente parlare. Questa tradizione è rimasta immutata nel tempo e immensi spazi di aggregazione, come Piazza Duomo, sono la dimostrazione di quanto sia importante l'aggregazione e la socializzazione, soprattutto in piccoli centri come Altamura dove tutti gli abitanti si conoscono, formando una grande famiglia. Anche qui è impressionante il numero di edifici storici, molti risalenti attorno al XII e XII secolo d.C. perfettamente conservati, con i grandi atri che danno il benvenuto agli ospiti, un segno della maestosità dei nobili proprietari
A city steeped in culture, art, archeology and even prehistory: in an abandoned quarry (Pontrelli locality), a deposit was discovered, dating back to about 70 million years ago (Cretaceous), of over 4000 well-preserved dinosaur footprints, organized in real tracks. They are footprints of over 200 specimens of at least 5 different species. Most of the footprints belong to herbivorous dinosaurs, but there are also some belonging to carnivorous dinosaurs.
Una città impregnata di cultura, arte, archeologia ed anche preistoria: ibfatti in una cava abbandonata (località Pontrelli), è stato scoperto un giacimento, risalente a circa 70 milioni di anni fà (Cretaceo), di oltre 4000 impronte ben conservate di dinosauri, organizzate in vere e proprie piste. Sono impronte di oltre 200 esemplari di almeno 5 diverse specie. La maggior parte delle impronte appartengono a dinosauri erbivori, ma ve ne sono anche appartenenti a dinosauri carnivori.
