Roman amphitheater
Hi all guys and welcome back to my blog. Today I return to present a painting with my favorite technique, the watercolor. The painting represents an ancient Roman amphitheater from the 2nd century BC. and I made it on a commission from a friend of mine who is passionate about ancient architecture like me.
This is the amphitheater of Sutri, a small town a few kilometers from Rome, discovered two centuries ago.
Like its famous big brother, the Flavian amphitheater known worldwide as the Colosseum, this smaller amphitheater is elliptical in shape and could hold 9,000 spectators.
This ancient amphitheater had a crowning at the top with statues and columns as was the custom for all Roman public places.
Since I could not do the on-site inspection in the province of Rome due to the limitations imposed by the government, I used some photographs to make the watercolor and I tried to paint a nice overview of the amphitheater in the sunlight.
What was important to highlight were the remains of the yellow tuff structure completely excavated in the hill and of the main entrance arch.

All fully inserted in the wooded park of the archaeological area with a beautiful sunlight that illuminates the terraces in tuff stone.

Anfiteatro romano
Ciao a tutti ragazzi e ben tornati sul mio blog. Oggi torno a presentare un dipinto con la mia tecnica preferita, l'acquarello. Il dipinto rappresenta un antico anfiteatro romano del II° secolo a.C. e l'ho realizzato su una commissione di un mio amico architetto appassionato come me di architettura antica.
Si tratta dell'anfiteatro di Sutri, un piccolo paese a pochi chilometri da Roma, scoperto due secoli fa. Come il famoso fratello maggiore, l'anfiteatro Flavio conosciuto in tutto il mondo come il Colosseo, questo anfiteatro più piccolo è di forma ellittica e poteva contenere 9000 spettatori.
Questo antico anfiteatro aveva in alto un coronamento con statue e colonne come era d'uso per tutti i luoghi pubblici romani.
Poichè non potevo fare il sopralluogo sul posto nella provincia di Roma a causa delle limitazioni imposte dal governo, per realizzare l'acquarello mi sono servito di alcune fotografie ed ho cercato di dipingere una bella panoramica dell'anfiteatro alla luce del sole.
Quello che premeva evidenziare erano i resti della struttura in tufo giallo completamente scavata nella collina e dell'arco principale di ingresso.

Il tutto pienamente inserito nel parco alberato della zona archeologica con una bella luce solare che illumina gli spalti in pietra tufacea.
