There are many beliefs about the birth of Ganesha and one such belief is that he was created by Parvati using earth which she moulded in the shape of a boy, at that time Shiva was on his meditative wandering. So, Parvati created Ganesha and set him as guard while she use to take bath.

One day Shiva returned back home from his meditative wandering. On finding Ganesha there and his claiming he is Parvati's son Shiva called "Bhutaganas" gang of demons, who then fought with Ganesha but later Shiva himself lopped off his head.

Parvati ran from her bath and argued against Shiva for killing their son. Shiva felt so regretful after this that he ordered a new head to be found for Ganesha and the head available was of an elephant so, like this Ganesha gained a new head and thus became the most unique.
