On Tyranny: 20 Lessons From The 20th Century

The video Timothy Snyder, "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons From The 20th Century" discusses the 2017 best-selling book On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century which predated COVID. However, it provides urgent and essential insights into the dramatic shifts we are experiencing now and how to deal with them. Snyder is the Levin Professor of History at Yale, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a permanent fellow of the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.

On Tyranny Graphic Edition: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century will be available in October.

Snyder is a frequent contributor to newspapers and journals on both sides of the Atlantic. He is the author of several books and one of the world’s leading historians of the twentieth century. An expert on Eastern Europe and on the Second World War, he has written and edited a number of acclaimed and prize-winning books about 20th-century European history. His internationally bestselling Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin won the Hannah Arendt Prize, the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding, and has been translated into 33 languages. Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning was longlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize and won the annual prize of the Dutch Auschwitz Committee.

The site says:

“Snyder is the award-winning author of Bloodlands and Black Earth, and his extensive study of the Holocaust has made him one of the foremost experts on authoritarian movements. In this brief and urgent call-to-action, Snyder, the Housum Professor of history at Yale, identifies striking parallels between the political landscape of pre-war Europe and today’s United States.

History’s lessons are many, however, and while democracies can fail, they can also resist and grow stronger. From the examples of the twentieth century, Snyder has distilled twenty essential points that should guide the current struggle. They are as simple as “do not obey in advance” and “beware the one-party state,” and as inspiring as “contribute to good causes” and “learn from peers in other countries.”“

Amazon says: “The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience. On Tyranny is a call to arms and a guide to resistance, with invaluable ideas for how we can preserve our freedoms in the uncertain years to come.”

How Tyranny Overtakes Democracy: Six Insights/Steps

Snyder says we are in an Historical Moment now. He spent 20 years studying the totalitarian European regimes. He points out that we are now experiencing things that people in Nazi, Germany and the Soviet Union experienced. Snyder lists the six insights that can help us understand how totalitarian regimes undermine democracy. We can see this happening now with the COVID “health” policies.

These six insights/steps are:

1. Regime Change can happen here. It happens all the time. It just hadn’t happened in America until now. So, it’s a dangerous mistake to believe that the kinds of experiences of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union can’t happen in America. This shift is characterized by no longer knowing what freedom feels like, the lack of certainty about what might be true, and the feeling that everything is slipping away.

2. We can learn from countries that experienced tyranny. The peoples in the countries where tyranny took over are not very different from us. That allows us to learn from them.

3. Snyder explains that tyranny or regime change happens fast -- it takes only 1-3 years. He says people get hit by so much bad news at the beginning that they conclude there is nothing they can do. He says the shift can also happen fast “by making us feel that nothing at all is happening, that things are normal, that this is just a minor adjustment. Things happen fast by making us experience life just in terms of the day-to-day.” So, we say to ourselves, “Today there weren’t jackboots. I’m just going to adjust to what’s happening today. Tomorrow’s another day. Maybe there won’t be a total disaster tomorrow.” Snyder explains that if you do that long enough, you will wake up to see that the disaster has arrived.

4. Ideas are real and ideas matter. He points out that, “It’s very important to realize that people who aspire to power often have clear worldviews which we can’t make go away.” We see this now with the COVID “health” policies which claim that lockdowns, masks, social distancing, and gene-altering injections are necessary for almost all 7+ billion people for a flu the CDC statistics show affect less than 1% of the population and for which there are four proven inexpensive cures. Reality doesn’t matter when fiction is marketed and weaponized by media and government. Tyranny often flagrantly violates the rule of law and common sense,

5. The lubricant of regime change is loss of trust. When people feel nothing is real, nothing is true, science, journalism, and policies can’t be trusted, all that remains is dogma enforced by power. We have to trust that science and policies and based on provable facts and reliable data. Without that trust, democracy is going to fail because it depends on faith in the rule of law. We see this loss of trust now with COVID “health” policies. Snyder says people who undermine trust in the rule of law are consciously ripping out the very heart of democracy.

6. Tyranny/authoritarianism is built with the help of the population. Snyder says, “It’s very hard to impose tyranny without the help of the people who think they are just adjusting or reacting. Everyone has more power than they think they have and their actions matter.”

How To Prevent A Tyrannical Takeover

Snyder discusses just two of the ideas from the book on how to resist tyranny.

Lesson #1: Do not obey in advance. Snyder points out: “Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. Individuals offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do. Anticipatory obedience is political tragedy. Because enough people volunteered their services, Nazis and Communists realized that they could move toward full regime change. The first heedless acts of conformity could not then be reversed.”

Lesson #19: Be a Patriot. Patriotism involves serving your country. A patriot knows that tyranny could happen here, but that we will stop it.

Snyder said his book begins with the US Founding Fathers because their assumption was that the threats would come from within and designed our system to hold off those threats. So, if Americans think it can’t happen here, we are making the opposite assumption the US Founders made.

The Founders started with the assumption that we ourselves are the biggest threat to this democratic experiment. If we forget that, we have taken the first step toward losing everything. Snyder says that people who care about the rule of law and want to preserve freedom must take action and everyone can do something. People who do nothing participate in the regime change and support the tyranny.

Snyder discussed the 1961 experiment Obedience to Authority by Yale psychologist Stanley Milgram which showed that most Americans are willing to do whatever an “authority” tells them to do -- even to the point of participating in the supposed “murder” of someone whose screams they can hear. The 2018 article asks How Would People Behave in Milgram’s Experiment Today? Compliance and resistance to the COVID “health” policies provides another answer to this question.

Snyder believed America was facing tyranny in 2017 when he gave the lecture. However, he seems to have been largely silent about the growing authoritarianism since the emergence of COVID. Yet, in the lecture, he talks about the policy of exclusionism which the COVID “health” policies are threatening to impose to force everyone to get the voluntary experimental COVID shot.

Snyder’s 2020 Comments

Pandemic helping the global spread of authoritarianism, says Yale historian Tim Snyder
August 31, 2020

“A global spread of authoritarianism is threatening to upset the liberal world order established after World War II, according to historian and author Timothy Snyder. The Levin Professor of History at Yale University in the US spoke with the SCMP’s Sarah Zheng on August 27, 2020, about his book On Tyranny, which has found an eager audience in Hong Kong and elsewhere around the world. They also discuss the surge of global protests, and how some governments have taken advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to impose 'emergency' powers as an excuse to tighten their grip on society.”

Films and Books: The Rick Simpson Story

“Watch the trailer for Chris's award-nominated documentary Healing Cancer with Cannabis: The Rick Simpson Story. Funds raised will help fund the production of TipToe To Tyranny. This film showcases the story of a man from Nova Scotia, Canada about his discovery of the healing power of cannabis oil that rocked the world, and his fight against the corrupt justice and medical system to get the information out to the world.”

The film explains that Rick Simpson grew hemp on his property to make the oil that cured his skin cancer. He gave the oil to 2,500 people around the world for free. The film says hemp oil can treat arthritis, lung cancer, arthritis, diabetes, warts, etc. Cannabis became legal in Canada in 2018.

The Amazon description for Phoenix Tears: The Rick Simpson Story says:

“Rick Simpson is a retired power engineer who worked for 25 years in Canada’s medical system. After suffering a severe head injury in 1997, he took all the medications doctors prescribed, but their side effects did nothing but harm. In desperation, he turned to the use of self-produced cannabis extracts and quickly found that he rediscovered one of the greatest natural medicines that can cure and control many different illnesses. Today, these extracts are usually called RSO or Rick Simpson Oil. Rick Simpson put up the www.phoenixtears.ca website in 2004 to spread the knowledge about the healing abilities of cannabis extracts.

He has also written two books on that subject 'Phoenix Tears - The Rick Simpson Story' and 'Rick Simpson Oil - Nature’s Answer for Cancer'. The first one relates the story of his life in Canada, his rediscovery and the things he went through in order to make his rediscovery known to all. For more than a decade he has been fighting for the repeal of all laws concerning the regulation of cannabis use with the aim of making it once again freely accessible to all. He has held many lectures on the subject and received numerous awards in recognition of his efforts and struggles, as well as for the impact his work has had on the changing legislation concerning cannabis in many countries around the world.

'I wanted to share my experience with you, concerning all the difficulties I encountered, after I discovered that extracts from cannabis hemp plant can cure cancer, and also cure or control a wide variety of other serious medical problems as well. I also described the medical miracles many patients have experienced with the use of these extracts. For the most part, this book covers my story from 2003 up until 2012. I hope we will all have the freedom to grow our own plants so we can make and use this life-saving medication.' Rick Simpson."

Also see the 2012 film RUN FROM THE CURE - The Rick Simpson Story which says:

“Rick Simpson is a Canadian man who Rediscovered Cannabis as a Cure for Cancer and many other Diseases. Rick Simpson CURED his own Skin Cancer "Basal Cell Carcinoma" Using 100% Natural THC containing Hemp Oil.”

When I learned in 2012 that Dr. Ron Paul had introduced two bills in Congress to legalize medical and industrial hemp, I created my Hemp Revolution video to help inform people of the importance of supporting the legislation. It was amazing to learn that medical hemp (banned by Nixon in the “War on Drugs”) was a safe medicine that had been used for thousands of years. The US Founding Fathers required farmers to grow industrial hemp because it is such a useful product.

Hemp Revolution 2020! from Neenah Payne on Vimeo.

Hemp Can Save American and The World shows that The US Constitution and the Bible are made from hemp paper because it does not yellow and saves trees. Henry Ford made his first cars from hemp and expected them to run on hemp oil. Hemp cars are 11 times stronger than cars made from steel but three times lighter. So, they are both safer and require less fuel. Since they are also biodegradable, they don’t clog landfills. Hemp makes homes that are superior in multiple ways. The United States is the largest importer of industrial hemp and is the only industrialized nation forbidden to grow it.

Hemp is a trillion-dollar crop that could power our economy, provide wonderful foods, make better clothes, save our trees, and help our soils. The list of benefits is long for industrial and medial hemp.

The video was updated every year until 2020.
