Screen-time - the everlasting question if you have kids!

Today I have been to the kindergarten as it was the first day for one of my kids so I had to stay around for a while. To my great surprise, I discovered that one of the people working in the kindergarten walked to a girl in the same group (she was 5 years old) and took the cell phone she had in her jacket. I wasn't the only person that was surprised by this fact, so was the person responsible for this group in the kindergarten. A cell phone shouldn't be in the jacket of a five-year-old, even though if it is just for playing... or should it?

It is commonly known that spending too much time with cell phones, tablets and computers has a negative impact on the brains of kids (and adults as well). Of course, there are positive activities you can do on a cell phone or a computer as well, but the overall picture tells us that staring at the screen to watch cartoons, stupid YouTube movies, or maybe to play all sorts of games.

But, what should we do? We have to find a healthy middle-road in which our children are a part of this world, without allowing it to have a negative impact on their lives. I guess most people would agree that a phone shouldn't be in the hands of a five-year-old without the supervision of a parent, but where is the limit?

We also know that some of the best programmers and hackers already have thorough knowledge about their expertise area already at an age of 10. Hindering them from using computers would at the same time hinder them from developing an area in which they are really skilled...

This is a hard topic...

I have a feeling that this is a tough topic where all parents try to do what they find best for their kids. The biggest problem is when the parents just throw a device into the hands of their kids, not for the good of the kids, but because they want some peace for themselves. It can easily happen and I have done it myself. The screen was never meant to be a babysitter, even though it can do a service like that easily.

Do you have any policy when it comes to screen time with your kids, or with yourself? I would love to hear from you and learn from your experience! :)
