It is impossible to pass through the center of the city of Merida, Venezuela and not notice this wonderful architectural work of which I have the immense pleasure of speaking to you today. The Minor Basilica Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Merida. This Cathedral is an icon of the architectural, religious and cultural heritage of Venezuela. It was designed by Architect Manuel Mujica Milán in 1944 and completed in 1958 although its original construction began many years before but was interrupted by the earthquake of 1812. Manuel Mujica Milán was an architect of Spanish origin, who left a great architectural legacy in the city of Mérida, being the cathedral one of his most relevant works, along with other renowned buildings of great value which I hope to write about in the future. La Catedral Basílica Menor de la Inmaculada Concepción de Mérida. Esta Catedral es icono del patrimonio arquitectónico, religioso y cultural de Venezuela. Fue Diseñada por el Arquitecto Manuel Mujica Milán en 1944 y culminada en 1958 aunque su construcción original inicio muchos años antes pero fue interrumpido por el terremoto de 1812. >El Arq. Manuel Mujica Milán, fue un arquitecto de origen Español, que dejo un gran legado arquitectónico en la ciudad de Mérida, siendo la catedral una de sus obras más relevantes, junto a otros edificios de renombre y de gran valor del cual espero escribir en un futuro. Me gusta mucho, lo que este gran profesional logro en el Centro Merideño, sus obras son desde mi punto de vista estupendas, sobrias, elegantes, con una mezcla de estilos que sin duda realzan la belleza de mi Estado. ![022.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/doriangel/EqDjWy8Z2tcQwq1Tei1J2v1prsdHfFm6swR9EiswZps23FsqMqpHkf6yAgYiHHRcqux.JPG) As for the architectural style of the cathedral, it is something that is not entirely clear to me, I think it is a mixture of styles such as neoclassical for its architectural lines and the symmetry of its facade and the baroque style for its curved details and exuberant ornamental details, however, I can not say with property to which architectural style it belongs, although during my last visit I heard one of the tour guides say that the predominant style is baroque. The typical gray of the structures with a clean finish prevails inside and outside the cathedral, but its beauty is given by the beautiful details that enhance the entire structure. The main façade is a true composition of architectural elements within which we have those beautiful circular columns, the central curved detail that supports an iron cross with beautiful details and in the center of it, a rose window with a stained glass window that reflects the image of the coat of arms of the State of Merida and where the image of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception is located. ![154.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/doriangel/Eqb36rN6kXUH5vF1HKi8zKwdfaVyri2YzRXoMx29gnCKnatCqEsKnqyFkxEetNgECX5.JPG) >En cuanto al estilo arquitectónico de la catedral, es algo que no me queda claro en su totalidad, considero que es una mezcla de estilos como el neoclásico por sus líneas arquitectónicas y la simetría de su fachada y el estilo barroco por sus detalles curvos y detalles ornamentales exuberantes, sin embargo, no puedo decir con propiedad a que estilo arquitectónico pertenece, aunque durante mi última visita escuche decir a uno de los guía turísticos que el estilo que predomina es el barroco. >El gris típico de las estructuras con acabado de obra limpia, prevalece dentro y fuera de la catedral, pero su belleza está dada por los hermosos detalles que realzan toda la estructura. La fachada principal, es una verdadera composición de elementos arquitectónicos dentro de los cuales tenemos esas hermosas columnas circulares, el detalle de forma curva central donde se apoya una cruz de hierro con hermosos detalles y en el centro de la misma, un rosetón con un vitral que refleja la imagen del escudo del Estado Mérida y donde se encuentra la imagen de la virgen de la Inmaculada. ![151.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/doriangel/EqUdLqtboDd5dXb11yu4YE3VN8Qnuh2VU6sHULQ2bs8WbBDe4VsPJmBwZEshYPfwygj.JPG) At its ends there are two beautiful towers, which give access to the bell tower, in the right tower there is a clock. Some time ago I shared the images of the Montalbán church if we look a little we can see that these towers are identical to the only tower of the church. It has three iron doors with beautiful wrought iron details that give strength to the front. Definitely this facade is imposing and the result of the work of great artists. >En sus extremos se encuentran dos bellas torres, que dan acceso al campanario, en la torre derecha se encuentra un reloj. Hace algún tiempo compartí las imágenes de la iglesia Montalbán si nos fijamos un poco podemos observar que estas torres son idénticas a la única torre de dicha iglesia. Posee tres puertas de Hierro con hermosos detalles forjados que le dan fuerza al frente. One of the works that I like the most is the sculpture called B Christ of the crowds, work of the sculptor Manuel de la Fuente>. Of this work there are 04 versions located in different places of the State, in this sculpture the author represents thousands of parishioners forming a crucified Christ. >Cada vez que dentro a este templo lo disfruto tanto como la primera vez, porque es un lugar donde puedes pasar un rato agradable, su diseño está muy bien pensado y me encanta admirar todo el trabajo arquitectónico, ingenieril y artístico que hay dentro de ella. Una de las obras que más me gusta es el la escultura llamada El Cristo de las multitudes, obra del escultor Manuel de la Fuente. De esta obra se tiene 04 versiones ubicadas en distintos lugares del Estado, en esta escultura el autor representa a miles de feligreses formando un Cristo crucificado.

Another curious fact about the cathedral is that it has a crypt where there is a relic, the remains of the martyr San Clemente, a soldier of the Roman Empire who was beheaded in the second century. It was given to the Bishop of Merida by his father in 1974. >Otro dato curioso de la catedral, es que cuenta con una cripta donde se encuentra una reliquia, los restos del mártir San Clemente un soldado del imperio romano que fue decapitado en el siglo II.
