There is a place I've mentioned several times already, where one cool mural is painted right next the another awesome one. It is right where the Diagonal Patriotismo meets the Circuito Bicentenario, between the neighborhoods Condesa and San Miguel Chapultepec. I thought I had covered all of the amazing wall paintings in that small section, in this post, this one, this one, and even here. But as it turns out, some of them have been painted over by new ones, which I just can't leave without sharing.
Big Bird as a Quetzal
You may have heard of the quetzal bird from Southern Mexico and Central America. It is known for its bright green feathers, especially its long tail feathers, which Aztec rules used to love for making royal headdresses. The funny thing about the quetzal is that in spite of its long tail feathers (which can be up to 65 cm / 26 inches), the bird itself is rather tiny (40 cm / 16 inches). It is therefor quite appropriate that Big Bird from Sesame Street, which normally may represent an overgrown canary with its bright yellow plumage, should play the role of the quetzal in Mexico. In any case, the green goes well with the blueish-pink background of Mayan pyramids.
No Doubt, It's Sesame Street All Right!
For anyone wondering whether the green cartoon bird is in fact Sesame Street related, the two images flanking it on both sides should clear up the last trace of doubt. It's Elmo and Abby Cadabby(???) Okay, honestly I'm not exactly positive on the pink character. I may have to catch up on my Sesame Street.
Looking at the tags, all three images, though obviously related, have been painted by three different artists. The first one with Big Bird was created by Choper Nawers, a graphic artist whose style ranges all over the place. The artist behind the Elmo mural is known as Minerva GM, a Cancun based painter. Finally, Abby (or whatever the pink muppet's name is) was brought to us by Adriana Rodríguez León, a.k.a. Scarlet Adrianne, whose instagram page is just a delight to visit, with all her super cute images.
