The city of Beirut is an old city, the official capital of the Republic of Lebanon, and extends over the country's coastal area east of the Mediterranean Sea, the largest city in the Republic.
The majority of economic activities are based in the capital, Beirut, as well as the political weight of the country. It is home to the majority of the political circles, such as the head of government and parliament, as well as the headquarters of ministries and government departments. Not only in Lebanon but also in the Arab world and the Middle East as a whole, thanks to its rich cultural heritage, such as publishing houses, international universities, museums, art galleries, free press and theaters.
The history of the city of Beirut and its origin dates back to 15 centuries BC, according to Al-Ghamarna, and has suffered greatly with natural disasters such as earthquakes, as well as devastating wars in its history, the last of which was the Lebanese civil war that devastated the country.
تعد مدينة بيروت من المدن القديمة، وهي العاصمة الرسميّة للجمهورية اللبنانية، وتمتد فوق المنطقة الساحليّة في البلاد الكائنة إلى الشرق من البحر الأبيض المتوسط، وهي أكبر مدينة في الجمهوريّة.
تتمركز في العاصمة بيروت الغالبية العظمى من النشاطات الاقتصاديّة من صناعة وخدمات وتجارة، وكما تحمل على كاهلها الثقل السياسيّ في البلاد، إذ تعتبر مقرّاً لأكثرية الدوائر السياسيّة كرئاسة الحكومة والبرلمان، وكما وفيها مقرات الوزارات والدوائر الحكوميّة، وبالإضافة إلى ذلك فإنّ لها دوراً ثقافيّاً مؤثراً لا يقتصر على لبنان فقط، بل يمتد إلى الوطن العربي والشرق الأوسط ككل، ويعود الفضل في ذلك إلى الثراء الثقافيّ الذي تمتلكه كدور النشر والجامعات الدوليّة والمتاحف ومعارض الفنون والصحافة الحرة والمسارح.
يعود تاريخ قيام مدينة بيروت ونشأتها إلى خمسة عشر قرناً قبل الميلاد وفقاً لما ذكرته رسائل الغمارنة، وعانت كثيراً مع الكوارث الطبيعيّة كالزلازل، وكما تعرّضت لحروب مدمّرة في تاريخها، وكانت آخر هذه الحروب الحرب الأهليّة اللبنانية التي ألحقت الدمار بالبلاد.
