Third time I walk through this beautiful Hive Pets community. Although I have previously shared about my dear morrocoyes, today I bring you a little animal that is not a pet, but a wild animal, the opossum or as it is called in Venezuela "rabipelado", being its scientific name Didelphimorphia.

As I have already mentioned in other posts, in the back of my house, I have a space of land, a miniature forest where I plant various plants, and on this backyard, many animal species also live, from insects to birds, and I have even found newborn cats there, skunks, and today at noon I found a beautiful baby possum, not so small, because it was already walking by itself in the branches and I did not see its mother nearby, but it is still small.

At noon, I usually go out to my backyard to walk my dogs. Today I noticed them very restless, they did not detach themselves from a specific area, from one of the sides, and they looked insistently at the adjoining lot and sniffed the fence separating both spaces. Faced with such insistence, I approached and was checking and I did not see anything. Then I remembered the episode with the iguana, (which if you want to read it you can see it in the link that I share below), then I looked up, and on a branch of a tree on the neighboring lot, I observed something very beautiful: A small opossum watching me with his big eyes, with a mixture of fear and curiosity at the same time. Immediately I took my cell phone, which I always carry with me, and I took several photos, only that being so high it was difficult for me to make a good focus, and they are the ones that I share below.

I had never seen a possum in daylight hours and in the open air, and I must say that it is a precious, beautiful animal, it looks like a stuffed animal, although I am aware that it is a wild animal that should not be domesticated. As far as I know, these animals are the only marsupials that inhabit the American continent, that is, they have a sac or pouch where they carry their young. Currently due to the invasion and destruction of their habitats, hunting for food or the prejudices that exist with respect to this animal, they are in danger of extinction; which is serious since they are vital for the balance of ecosystems, since they are natural predators of snakes, mice, spiders, scorpions, centipedes, ticks; so their work is essential to prevent these populations from dispersing. They also eat fruits, leaves, nectar, flowers, which is why they can be natural carriers and disseminators of seeds.

Obviously I did not let my dogs attack her, and if it is within my power I will not let that ever happen, since she deserves to live with peace of mind in my backyard. I am not worried that part of my crops will be eaten, as there are huge tamarind and mamón trees; There are also cherries and pomegranates, and today she was interested in eating the fruits of the tarare tree, (uvito, caujaro or cautaro) whose scientific name is Cordia dentata. Here is a photo of one of the bunches that I suppose I was tasting.

Saludos.
