(ESP-ENG) Ghost underwent surgery: Care and Elizabethan Collar step by step

It is with great joy today that I want to tell you that Ghost's operation was a complete success!🙏 But to ensure their health there are several things I have had to do.

Hello, dear Hiver Petslover😺, a few weeks ago I shared my experience with Ghost and the umbilical hernia that developed after he was born. I was very nervous at the time because we were getting ready for him to have surgery, but it did me good to write the post and receive your good wishes for my baby's recovery.

Post: Ghost has an umbilical hernia, what do I do? what will I do?

Today, besides telling you that the surgery was performed last Monday and that thanks to God and the Veterinarian, it went very well, I want to share with you the post-operative care that we must take into account to ensure a successful recovery.

Together with the Vet, we made the decision to submit Ghost to two surgeries, so that the recovery would be parallel and he would not have to go through the same trauma twice, so during the intervention, the Vet corrected the umbilical hernia and also spayed (castrated) him. Both wounds are delicate and it is a priority to ensure proper healing.

The umbilical hernia wound is much bigger, but I give both the same attention. What I have to do to cure his wound, is to use physiological solution and gauze to clean it and remove the scabs that are forming, to promote good healing. Ghost is a very sweet kitten and he lets himself be treated calmly. I place him on a towel and talk to him so he knows what I am going to do, he understands and stays calm until I am done. Some cats find this terrible, but it is important that the process of healing his wound is not traumatic.

This is VERY, VERY IMPORTANT. As we all know cats lick themselves continuously. When our cat has a wound with sutures, he will do everything possible to bite them until they are removed. It is normal that they want to do it, but it is very dangerous, so it is our responsibility to avoid it. There are several methods that can be used. They can be placed in clothing or a girdle. We put a cloth girdle on Ghost, but he didn't like it and took it off, so we resorted to a very well known method: The Elizabethan collar.

❌ No funciono// Did not work
✅ Si funciono // If it worked

@alvarezjessicaygos.png

The Elizabethan collar is an excellent method of protection; it prevents our kitty from licking the wound area, so we can ensure that it heals properly, also, unlike what it seems, it is not uncomfortable for our pet as long as it is the right size. Now, pet stores sell them, but they are a bit expensive, so I decided to make one myself:

Paso a Paso // Step by Step

@alvarezjessicaygos.png

It is very simple and inexpensive. The materials we need are: 1 sheet of acetate, a shoe braid, hot silicone, scissors and a marker. The first thing we are going to do is to take our acetate sheet and fold it in half.

@alvarezjessicaygos.png

Then we are going to measure the neck of our kitten with our fingers, just place the thumb and index finger on each side of the neck. When you have this measurement, mark it on each side, starting from the center of the acetate sheet and draw an arc to join both points. Then do the same but with the measurement of the head of our kitten, for which you only have to place your thumb at the base of the neck and the index finger above his ears. Then take this measurement to the acetate sheet, mark lines above the first arch and draw a second arch. This will be the top of the necklace.

@alvarezjessicaygos.png

The next step is to trim both bows, then use the shoe braid on the lower edges (this will prevent our kitty from getting hurt by the acetate, so choose a thick and soft braid). Use the hot silicone and glue the braid on both sides, leaving it a little below the edge of the acetate so that it is the braid that is in direct contact with the neck of our kitten and NOT the acetate.

And to finish, cut 4 pieces of the shoe braid and glue 2 on each side. I thought this would be a good idea to attach the Elizabethan collar around our kitty's neck so it wouldn't be too loose or too tight and it really worked.

¡GRACIAS!😻
I recommend making the collar a little higher. I had a miscalculation and then I had to modify it a little bit so that it would fit Ghost in the middle of his ears. Other than that, there was no problem, making this collar was a wonderful idea and that's why I'm sharing it with you. Ghost is still recovering, next week the sutures will be removed and God willing he will continue to be very well. Thank you so much for reading me and thank you so much to those Hivers who wished Ghost to come out of the surgery well, THANK YOU!😻
