Hi friends, today I had to walk from Sennaya Square to the Fontanka River and I decided to take a shortcut through the Sennoi Market area. I remembered that it is Friday, and we have a great #marketfriday challenge by @dswigle, so I took my smartphone out of my pocket and took some pictures of the market.

First of all I want to tell you a little bit about the Sennoi market. The Sennaya Square area is a historical shopping area. Even the name "Sennoi" is associated with trade, this word means "Hay" and reminds us of the time when the hay was traded on the square. Even before the buildings around the square were built trade had started here. The road through this area was used by merchants to get to St. Petersburg. At the entrance to the city there was a large marketplace.

So, this area was not central and poor city dwellers began to settle here. Two of these circumstances, the cheap wholesale market at the entrance to the city and the population of the urban poor, led to a natural result: Sennaya Square began to be considered a disadvantaged place. The area lost its negative reputation only in the 20th century, when the former suburbs became the center of the city. But the Sennoi Market remained the cheapest market in the city.

I walked along the edge of the sales aisles and photographed only the most prosperous display cases. The prices of vegetables here are about 30-50% lower than in the store near my house. I photographed fruits and vegetables close-up, and you can try to compare our prices with those in your country. All prices are in rubles, today the dollar/ruble exchange rate is about 75. That is, if it says 75 rubles, it's $1. But some prices are listed per piece (lemons, avocados, garlic) and some per kilo (apples, pears, potatoes, cucumbers).

If I ventured into the back of the sales aisles, I could have photographed even lower prices. But buying there is quite risky, with some vendors tending to put spoiled vegetables in the bag.

In addition to fruits and vegetables the market sells everything: shoes, tights, nightgowns, flower garlands, hats and panama hats, umbrellas and jeans... if you are suddenly transported to St. Petersburg from another era and you need a quick and cheap clothes to not stand out from the crowd, you will find everything you need here.

On my way out of the market I saw several stalls with flower seedlings. This was the end of my walk through the market: lots and lots of flowers.
