Rising Star Strategies: The Importance of Instrument Specialisation

When opening a 12-pack of Rising Star cards I always groan when the first card (the rare slot) is an instrument.

It’s not that they are unimportant, but I am always looking for fans and there’s only one instrument that is useful to me which is Drums.

When my buddy @goblinknackers started investing and playing Rising Star I got bombarded with questions. He didn't understand the concept of instruments at all.

In the real world, a talented musician such as the elusive 'John' would wield a single instrument, sing, play, and woo the crowds.

Rising Star, though themed around a budding star moving up the ranks can only simulate reality to a certain extent.

...'many drool over 'John'. If you want one.., then buying might be a better idea than hoping for a booster drop. You might wait forever'...

To contain the Ego level rising (that is your head getting too big), you need skill. Unlike fans which are difficult to get, Skill can be earned by taking music lessons.

A new Rising Star MUST specialise in one of the instrument forms lest the Ego level will go off the scale resulting in much fewer STARBITS being earned.

Unlike 'John' we plebs need lots of instruments to gain more skill when doing a lesson. If you walk into your Singing lesson with 3000 microphones then you come out with a lot more skill.

Unrealistic but that’s how it works. They all add up and are cumulative to your development.

When opening Rising Star packs, you will get many instrument types and the types that you DO NOT specialise in are totally useless to you.

If I attempted a Singing lesson I would get between 45-90 skill. Any of the other lessons besides Drums would yield a similar dismal skill increase.

A Drum lesson would yield me between 2504 and 5008 skill. Now, which type should I choose?

…’a section of my instruments, and almost ALL drums. I keep one of each other type to be a completist.’…

Other card types such as People and Transport cards always have value and will cumulatively work for your career in the same fashion as instruments.

This brings me to the next obstacle you will face. All music lessons contain level caps meaning you can't train unless you are a specific level or above.

Many new players will be tempted to the 'Basic Singing Lesson' which is a misleading title as it is as relevant and equal to any of the other lessons.

image.png
...'singing is just as effective as any other lesson, don't be misled by the 'Basic' prefix. It's a legacy thing'...

Focusing on Singing is all well and good until you realise that many new players have the same idea which adds to the demand for microphone cards.

In an ideal world, a new player should be able to choose from any of these specialisations but due to the difficulty of fast progression are unable to.

There used to be a card named ‘XP Boost’ that was discontinued sometime in 2020 as it essentially fast-tracked players through the FOUR tiers quickly.

image.png

...'XP Boost cards are available on the used marketplace and hideously expensive. Buy them, use them and then sell them for double your price. They ain't going to get any cheaper!'...

These cards are still available to buy but at a cost. They are considered powerful boosters and me being an early adaptor to Rising Star once owned many.

I am trying not to get side-tracked as what I am trying to get across is the specialisation factor and that if you want to progress then pick a type and either SELL or TRADE any rare or epic cards that you pull that are not of your type.

Rare cards typically contain 50 luck while Epics can be from 100 to 200 luck. There is no magic in an Epic card that makes it more potent to giving you more skill per lesson than a rare card.

image.png

...'ONE Pro Kit or THREE Marching Drums? Personally, I don't care as the luck is equal. Some may disagree'...

Owning it may seem prestigious but to me, THREE rare cards of 50 luck is equal in value to ONE epic that has 150 luck.

Bear this in mind when you come to trade and point it out if your trading partner thinks their Epic card is worth its weight in gold.

Try and find regular instrument trading partners who you can trust. If someone rips you off then their credibility would be trashed as the thief would likely be exposed on the discord channel but it is best to be avoided.

I have regular trading partners for Guitars, Production, Pianos, and Microphones.

...'Bugle is the current in-print Orchestral rare. They are cheap at 2300 STARBITS each. I seem to pull more than my fair share in booster packs'...

Orchestral is the one I struggle offloading and I would recommend this to you as the new player as the one to specialise in EXCEPT the level requirements are 75 which is steep for a new player.

Level Requirements for Music Lessons.

  • Singing – 10
  • Guitar – 10
  • Orchestral – 75
  • Production – 30
  • Piano – 25
  • Drums – 50

Why Orchestral? Not many players choose this one and so there is a glut of cards out there that are cheaper than the other instruments.

If you can, hold out and specialise in Pianos. There are far fewer Elton John's in Rising Star than there are Slash's and Adele's. That's my advice.
