Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) is an area located in Montenegro. The bay is located below the cliffs of Lovćen and Orjen. It is also known by its short name Boka, and the name comes from the Italian word "bocca" which means "mouth" or "opening".
The Bay of Kotor is the only fjord in the Mediterranean, which in July 2000 was listed as one of the 25 most beautiful fjords in the world.
The bay has been inhabited since ancient times and there are medieval and picturesque towns such as: Kotor, Igalo, Tivat, Risan, Perast and Herceg Novi. There are numerous Catholic and Orthodox churches and monasteries around the bay, making this place attractive to many believers and pilgrims from the region and around the world.
Kotor is an old maritime and cultural center. For centuries, it was a crossroads of trade routes and under the strong influence of the Venetian Republic. It is protected from the mountainous hinterland by a solid defensive wall built in Byzantine times. In the walled city, there are numerous cultural and historical monuments, palaces, cathedrals and churches. It is famous for carnivals and festivities, which are held in summer and winter.
Perast is the home of many world-famous sailors. It is full of the remains of old noble palaces, which only hint at the former splendor and wealth. Once, it was a naval training center where Russians came to learn maritime skills. That is why this place is considered the cradle of the Russian fleet. In front of Perast there are two islands, one natural and the other artificial: Our Lady of Stone and St. George.
Risan the ancient Rison, is known for the remnants of ancient culture. This town was the location of the capital of the Illyrian queen Teuta.
