Haunted Steinahellir Cave and Asolfsskalakirkja

Steinahellir is a cave that has occurred due to natural formations is located in Southern Iceland. For us, we had not planned to visit it originally but our trip to the Vestmannaeyjar island got canceled because of severe weather so we had an extra day to see other things.

They say that this cave is haunted and people have seen ghosts outside and inside of this cave throughout history. They also say that one sailor died in this cave who got stranded on the beach nearby.

Going through the fence you can see walls covered with ferns.

Tales tell that you should not pick up these enchanted ferns from the cave because bad luck will befall anyone who does that.

One story say that one farmer picked up some ferns and a couple of days later he started losing his cows, falling down from the cliffs, and getting ill.

Another story tells that a traveler picked some up and a year later he got very sick and blame it on this.

Unfortunately/fortunately I didn't see any ghosts there that could prove to me that they exist. I also didn't pick up any ferns on the wall, why risk it right.

Still, I got to capture some great shots inside. These are a couple of seconds long pictures because it was quite dark there for handheld pictures.

Another subject of this post is Asolfsskalakirkja that we decided to visit.
In Iceland, there is a huge amount of churches everywhere, even in every village where only 100 people live. Some are also even in a random place where no one lives nearby.

This church is located 10km away from the cave you saw earlier.

The dog you see in the photo came to meet with us, he was living nearby in a house. Wanted to play with us, especially with small stones that were on the asphalt.

You can see dogs like this everywhere in Iceland, I don't know what breed it is but black and white dogs like this I think I saw at least 10 times. He was really cool and friendly.

Here are some more nature views around the church.
