Hace unas cuentas semanas ya decidí conversar un poco sobre varios géneros musicales comenzando con la salsa, merengue, reggae hasta llegar el día de hoy al rock and roll. Voy a tratar de hacer la historia lo más resumida posible porque como imaginarán es muy extensa y hay mucho material a considerar tomando en cuenta que vamos a empezar por allá en los años 50.
A few weeks ago I decided to talk a little bit about various musical genres starting with salsa, merengue, reggae until today's rock and roll. I will try to make the history as brief as possible because as you can imagine it is very extensive and there is a lot of material to consider taking into account that we are going to start back in the 50's.
Todos en algún momento de nuestras vidas hemos escuchado a las grandes bandas de rock y muy seguramente seguimos haciéndolo hoy en día, es por eso que creo que cada uno de nosotros tenemos chispa por este genero o simplemente el factor nostalgia por hacernos recordar tiempos pasados. No siempre fui una persona rockera pero si estaba al tanto de lo que sonaba y más por ser melómano oía ciertas cosas de los grandes del rock. Demos inicio entonces a este gran pero resumido viaje.
All of us at some point in our lives have listened to the great rock bands and most likely continue to do so today, that's why I think each of us have a spark for this genre or simply the nostalgia factor to remind us of times past. I wasn't always a rocker but I was aware of what was playing and more for being a music lover I listened to certain things of the greats of rock. So let's start this great but short trip.

Para entender el rock tenemos que saber que es un "mix", una mezcla de varios otros géneros musicales como el Blues, el Country, R&B, etc. De las características más importantes es el uso de la guitarra eléctrica con canciones en compases 4/4 pero eso puede que haya ido evolucionando con el tiempo al punto de que hoy en día pueda que sea un poco complicado dar con elementos comunes.
To understand rock we have to know that it is a "mix", a mixture of several other musical genres like Blues, Country, R&B, etc. One of the most important characteristics is the use of the electric guitar with songs in 4/4 time signatures, but this may have evolved over time to the point that nowadays it may be a little complicated to find common elements.
Y bueno, algunos de los conceptos que hay detrás de todas las canciones de rock van desde lo social, le habla al amor y muchas veces a lo político también. En muchas ocasiones la música a servido como bandera para ciertos movimientos sociales de distintas indoles como la denuncia en lo social, la lucha contra el sistema, entre otros.
And well, some of the concepts behind all rock songs range from the social, it speaks to love and often to the political as well. On many occasions the music has served as a banner for certain social movements of different indoles such as social denunciation, the struggle against the system, among others.

Como dije anteriormente el rock and roll nace por allá en los 50 en los Estados Unidos y cuya unión de todos esos estilos que les nombré antes fue liderizada por Chuck Berry, si bien es verdad no fue el primero fue el que lo hizo mejor. Berry fue como la semilla que comenzó todo ese proceso pero hay un detalle: en aquellos tiempos el racismo en Estados Unidos era algo que estaba muy presente por lo que los americanos no lo aceptaban mucho y en su lugar se dio a conocer el que hasta el día de hoy es el REY, Elvis Presley.
As I said before, rock and roll was born back in the 50's in the United States and the union of all those styles I mentioned before was led by Chuck Berry, although it is true that he was not the first, he was the one who did it better. Berry was like the seed that started the whole process but there is a detail: in those times racism in the United States was something that was very present so the Americans did not accept him much and in his place the one that until today is the KING, Elvis Presley, became known.

Elvis ciertamente fue la cara del Rock and Roll en aquellos tiempos al punto de que logró convertirse en toda una estrella del cine haciendo que esta música se hiciera popular a nivel mundial logrando que TODO el mundo hablara de este fenómeno al punto que mucha de la juventud empezó a sentir cierto interés y a involucrarse más en el panorama musical.
Elvis was certainly the face of Rock and Roll at the time, to the point that he became a movie star, making this music popular worldwide and getting the whole world talking about this phenomenon to the point that many of the youth began to feel some interest and become more involved in the music scene.
Llegamos a la década de los sesenta y con ella llegó un movimiento que se denominó "La Invasión Británica". Si, es verdad que el rock and roll nació en suelo norteamericano a través de una gran cantidad de artistas y de las películas de Hollywood pero también es verdad que ese mismo movimiento hizo que pegara en otros países de una manera tal que nacieron GRANDES bandas que hasta el sol de hoy siguen siendo la referencia.
We arrived at the decade of the sixties and with it came a movement called "The British Invasion". Yes, it is true that rock and roll was born in North American soil through a great number of artists and Hollywood movies, but it is also true that this same movement made it hit other countries in such a way that BIG bands were born that are still the reference to this day.

Muchos de los artistas de los 50 que dejaron de hacer música dieron paso a estos grupos ingleses: The Beatles, The Rolling Stone, The Who, etc. Estas bandas lograron reinventar el sonido del rock al punto de lograr llevarse todo por el medio y así conquistar al publico de Estados Unidos que en aquella época no estaba muy acostumbrado a escuchar música que no fuera de su propio país.
Many of the artists of the 50's that stopped making music gave way to these English groups: The Beatles, The Rolling Stone, The Who, etc. These bands managed to reinvent the sound of rock to the point of taking everything by storm and conquering the U.S. public, which at that time was not very used to listening to music that was not from their own country.
Seguimos subiendo y llegamos al piso de los años 70 y con él todo el movimiento Hippie, la psicodelia, la revolución sexual y el amor libre que marcó muy en lo profundo al rock y que le dio paso a nuevos artistas como Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, entre otros. Pero sin duda los más importantes que surgieron fueron Led Zepellin, Pink Floyd, Queen, Black Sabbath, etc.
We keep going up and we reach the floor of the 70's and with it all the Hippie movement, psychedelia, sexual revolution and free love that deeply marked rock and gave way to new artists such as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, among others. But undoubtedly the most important artists that emerged were Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, Black Sabbath, etc.

Fueron estas dos bandas las encargadas de dividir al rock en todos los subgéneros que conocemos hoy en día. Led Zeppelin con un sonido sumamente pesado y Pink Floyd con uno un poco más alternativo por ponerle un nombre. Fue precisamente en esa bifurcación del genero cuando el rock and roll perdió el "and roll" y se comenzó a llamar únicamente "ROCK".
These two bands were in charge of dividing rock into all the subgenres we know today. Led Zeppelin with an extremely heavy sound and Pink Floyd with a slightly more alternative sound to put a name to it. It was precisely in that bifurcation of the genre when rock and roll lost the "and roll" and began to be called only "ROCK".
Algunos de los subgéneros más comunes podrían ser: Heavy Metal, Rock progresivo, Punk Rock, Rock Alternativo, Glam Rock, entre muchos más; y TODOS siguiendo la pauta del instrumento base que le otorga el sonido clásico al rock, la guitarra eléctrica.
Some of the most common subgenres could be: Heavy Metal, Progressive Rock, Punk Rock, Alternative Rock, Glam Rock, among many more; and ALL following the guideline of the base instrument that gives the classic sound to rock, the electric guitar.
A partir de ahí en adelante, es decir, en los años ochenta nace un mundo totalmente nuevo para el Rock porque aparecen en la escena nuevos sonidos o evoluciones de los que ya conocíamos, como los electrónicos y el uso de los sintetizadores. Y es por este nacimiento que salen a la luz el "New Wave" y un rock un poco más estilizado el "Glam Rock" de la mano de artistas como Billy Idol, Prince, Madonna, Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, etc.
From then on, that is to say, in the eighties, a whole new world was born for Rock because new sounds or evolutions of the ones we already knew appeared on the scene, such as electronic sounds and the use of synthesizers. Y ya para ir culminando arribamos a finales de los 80 y comienzos de la década de los noventa con un giro de 180 grados con un rock mucho más crudo y pesado. Podríamos pensar que iba a ser más complejo porque ya los sonidos de épocas pasadas estaban bastante consolidados en el publico y el pop tenía una presencia dura en las radios pero la verdad es que no lo fue.
And to finish off we arrive at the end of the 80's and the beginning of the 90's with a 180 degree turn with a much rawer and heavier rock. We could think that it was going to be more complex because the sounds of past eras were already well consolidated in the public and pop had a strong presence in the radios but the truth is that it was not.
Esas guitarras con esos sonidos duros y estos nuevos artistas con un estilo lleno de rebeldía lograron nuevamente llamar la atención de muchos al punto de que los festivales de música se coparan en su totalidad y veríamos estadios llenos de multitudes. Estamos hablando de grupos como: Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis, etc.
Those guitars with those hard sounds and these new artists with a style full of rebelliousness managed again to attract the attention of many to the point that the music festivals were filled to capacity and we would see stadiums full of crowds. We are talking about groups such as: Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis, etc.

Y es de esta manera como en una muy resumida historia hablo un poco de este genero tan aclamado por todos, siento que dejé por fuera a muchos grupos y artistas pero es que sino es así estaríamos aquí días y días. Entonces para no hacer más extensivo esta publicación en una próxima haré un top de las mejores canciones y grupos que marcaron cada respectiva época.
And this is how in a very brief history I talk a little of this genre so acclaimed by all, I'm sorry I left out many groups and artists but otherwise we would be here for days and days. So as not to make this publication more extensive in a next one I will make a top of the best songs and groups that marked each respective era.
