Nongqongqo es el nombre de una prisión en Sudáfrica donde estuvieron presos Nelson Mandela , activista sudafricano que lideró la lucha contra el apartheid. En 1994 se convirtió en presidente de la República de Sudáfrica hasta 1999; Albert Luthuli, quien fuera presidente del Congreso Nacional Africano y Premio Nobel de la Paz en 1960 y Walter Sisulu, activista sudafricano contra el apartheid.
La canción fue compuesta por Miriam Makeba, conocida también como Mamá África. Fue una cantante sudafricana y activista por los derechos humanos, ​ icono de la lucha contra el racismo y el apartheid.

La canción está cantada en zulú, principal lengua materna de Sudáfrica.
La canción la grabé en mi 1er. LP en México el año 1981 y la aprendí en los 70´s mientras vivía en Alemania (RDA) y fuí integrante del "Ensemble Solidarität".
Ese LP es una especie de homenaje-agradecimiento a todos esos grupos de tantos países con los que compartí y conviví girando por todo el país.

I recorded the song on my 1st LP in Mexico in 1981 and learned it in the 70's while I was living in Germany (GDR) and was a member of the "Ensemble Solidarität ".
This LP is a kind of homage-gratitude to all those groups from so many countries with whom I shared and lived together touring all over the country.
