Led Zeppelin II ist das zweite Album der Band Led Zeppelin. Es wurde von Januar - August 1969 in London, Los Angeles, New York und Vancouver aufgenommen und am 22. Oktober 1969 veröffentlicht.
Jimmy Page: "Ein Teil des Materials entstand bei den Proben für die nächste Tour und beim Zusammenstellen von neuem Material".
Die Produktion wurde vollständig Jimmy Page zugeschrieben, während Eddie Kramer das Engineering übernahm. Kramer sagte später: "Der berühmte Whole Lotta Love-Mix, bei dem alles verrückt spielt, ist eine Kombination aus Jimmy und mir, die an einem kleinen Mischpult herumfliegen und an jedem bekannten Knopf drehen. Wir haben einige der Tracks in den bizarrsten Studios aufgenommen, die man sich vorstellen kann ... aber am Ende klang es verdammt großartig ... es gab nur einen Verantwortlichen und das war Mr. Page."
Whole Lotta Love basiert auf dem Song „You Need Love“ von Muddy Waters aus dem Jahre 1962 und enthält Zitate aus dem Song „You Need Loving“ von den Small Faces aus dem Jahre 1966. Niemand weiß, woher das unvergessliche (Gitarren-)Riff kam, das sich im Song stets wiederholt. John Paul Jones meinte, es sei erstmals als Teil von Dazed and Confused auf einem Bühnen-Jam entstanden. Robert Plant kommentierte es so: „Egal wo es herkam, es hing alles an diesem Riff“.
Für Jimmy Page war "Whole Lotta Love" ein simpler Rocksong, bei dem im Mittelteil ein paar elektronische Sounds eingesetzt werden. Später erklärte Page, wie er das Riff aufgebaut hatte: „Ich hatte es schon fix und fertig, ehe ich ins Studio kam. Ich hatte es einstudiert. Und diesen ganzen anderen Kram – die Klangwellen und so weiter – habe ich im Studio zusammengebaut und dann Effekte und Verfremdungen darübergelegt. Das absteigende Riff habe ich mit einer Slide aus Metall und Rückwärtsecho gemacht. Ich glaube, damit war ich der Erste. […]“
Da Led Zeppelin sich weigerten, "Whole Lotta Love" als zurechtgestutzte 3-Minuten-Single aufzunehmen, wurde der Titel von den Top-Forty Sendern der USA zunächst boykottiert (Zu jener Zeit passte ein Song von 5:34 Minuten nicht ins Schema der Radiostationen - hat sich ja bis heute nicht geändert ...).
Die Chart-Erfolge des Albums und Hörerreaktionen zwangen die Programmchefs jedoch zum Umdenken. Nachdem sich die Band weigerte, den Titel zu kürzen, schnitten einige Sender aus dem Solopart ein Stück heraus. Die Hörer waren froh, überhaupt etwas von Led Zeppelin im Radio zu hören. Innerhalb weniger Tage war die Plattenfirma Atlantic aufgrund der massiven Nachfrage gezwungen, diese gekürzte und verfälschte Version als Single zu veröffentlichen.
Die Band lehnte jedoch die Veröffentlichung der 3:06 Minuten langen Single aus kreativen Gründen immer strikt ab. - Good Boys! 😎
Das Album verkaufte über 15 Mil. mal und erreichte die Spitzenplätze der globalen Album-Charts und hielt sich dort über 2 Jahre. In Deutschland erreichte "Whole Lotta Love" auch als Single die Chart-Spitze.

Led Zeppelin II is the second album by the band Led Zeppelin. It was recorded from January - August 1969 in London, Los Angeles, New York and Vancouver and released on October 22, 1969.
Jimmy Page: "Some of the material was created during rehearsals for the next tour and putting together new material".
Production was credited entirely to Jimmy Page, while Eddie Kramer handled engineering. Kramer later said, "The famous Whole Lotta Love mix, where everything goes crazy, is a combination of Jimmy and me flying around a little mixing board and turning every knob known to man. We recorded some of the tracks in the most bizarre studios imaginable ... But in the end it sounded fucking great ... there was only one person responsible, and that was Mr. Page."
Whole Lotta Love is based on the 1962 song "You Need Love" by Muddy Waters and includes quotes from the 1966 song "You Need Loving" by the Small Faces. No one knows where the memorable (guitar) riff came from that is repeated throughout the song. John Paul Jones said it first came about as part of Dazed and Confused on a stage jam. Robert Plant commented, "No matter where it came from, it all hinged on that riff."
For Jimmy Page, "Whole Lotta Love" was a simple rock song with some electronic sounds in the middle section. Later, Page explained how he built the riff: "I had it locked and loaded before I got to the studio. I had it rehearsed. And all this other stuff - the sound waves and so on - I put together in the studio and then put effects and alienation over it. The descending riff I did with a slide of metal and reverse echo. I think I was the first to do that. [...]"
Since Led Zeppelin refused to record "Whole Lotta Love" as a trimmed-down 3-minute single, the track was initially boycotted by the top-forty stations in the U.S. (At the time, a song of 5:34 minutes didn't fit into the radio stations' scheme of things - hasn't changed to this day ...).
However, the chart success of the album and listener reactions forced the program bosses to rethink. After the band refused to cut the track, some stations cut a piece out of the solo part. Listeners were happy to hear anything at all from Led Zeppelin on the radio. Within days, due to massive demand, the Atlantic record company was forced to release this shortened and bastardized version as a single.
However, the band always strictly refused to release the 3:06 minute single for creative reasons. - Good Boys! 😎
The album sold over 15 mil. copies and reached the top of the global album charts and stayed there for over 2 years. In Germany, "Whole Lotta Love" also reached the top of the chart as a single.
