POLIAC Champions League and Consolation Cup - a Sneak Peek into Season 4. My Actifit Report Card: October 20 2021

The Champions League is well in progress and Consolation Cup kicks off today. A good time to outline the format for the next, 4th, Season.

Champions League

Format

16 players, group phase followed by play-offs.

Rounds:

• group phase (4 groups of 4; double round robin)
  -- top 2 of each group advance into play-offs
  -- NOVELTY: players who finish 3rd in each group will be transferred to Consolation Cup quarterfinals
• Quarterfinals (two legs)
• Semifinals (two legs)
• Final (single match)

Automatic Admittance

6 slots:

• Defending Champion of Champions League Season 3
• Winner of League One Edition 5
• NOVELTY: Winner of Consolation Cup Season 3
• Top 3 ranked players after Season 3 (after the above three)

Qualifications

10 slots for winners of qualifiers, which will be played in two rounds, each with two legs

• Top 10 ranked players (after those admitted automatically) will be seeded and will start in Round 2
• Up to 20 players will start in Round 1
  -- top 10 ranked will be seeded
• winners of Round 1 advance to Round 2
• NOVELTY: 10 players who are eliminated in Round 2, will automatically be transferred to Consolation Cup Round of 16

Consolation Cup

Format

16 players, play-offs mode
Top 8 ranked will be seeded

Rounds:

• Round of 16 (two legs)
• Round of 8 (two legs)
• NOVELTY: Quarterfinal (two legs) - 4 winners of Consolation Cup Round of 8 and 4 players who finished 3rd in Champions League group phase
• Semifinal (two legs)
• Final (single match)

Automatic Admittance

10 slots for players eliminated in Round 2 of Champions League qualifications, top 8 ranked will be seeded

Qualifications

6 slots for winners of qualifiers, single round.

• 10 players eliminated in Round 1 of Champions League qualifications, top 6 ranked will be seeded
• 2 slots open for newcomers (or "bye")

if there are many newcomers willing to participate, Consolation Cup qualifiers will be extended into 2 rounds. Players who "fall off" from Champions League qualifiers, will start in Round 2

Ranking system

Rolling over 4 seasons, weighted:

• 100% of points gained in Previous Season ("current -1"),
• 75% of points gained in "current -2",
• 50% of points gained in "current -3",
• 25% of points gained in "current -4"

Points:

• All qualifying matches
  -- 1pt for a win
  -- 0.5pt for a draw
• Champions League
  -- 2pt for a win
  -- 1pt for a draw
  -- 1pt for playing in each round
  -- 1pt for the Final Winner
• Consolation Cup
  -- 1pt for a win
  -- 0.5pt for a draw
  -- 0.5pt for playing in each round
  -- 0.5pt for the Final Winner

Use

Ranking after previous season close is used for

• automatic admittance into Champions League
• Champions League and Consolation Cup qualifications.
• Champions League group setup - here with a twist:
  -- players who beat a seeded player in the qualifiers, take over the defeated player's seed
• Consolation Cup Round of 16 seeding
