Even the ancient Romans knew how to appreciate the pleasant aspects of country life and relaxed in their magnificent country villas from the daily grind of the nearby city of Augusta Treverorum, the Roman Trier, which even then had more than 100,000 inhabitants. I visited the remains of two of these villas on a short day trip.
Bereits die alten Römer wussten die angenehmen Seiten des Landlebens zu schätzen und erholten sich in ihren prächtigen Landvillen vom Alltagstrott der nahen Großstadt Augusta Treverorum, dem römischen Trier, das schon damals mehr als 100.000 Einwohner zählte. Die Überreste zweier dieser Villen habe ich auf einem kleinen Tagesausflug besichtigt.

The Villa Rustica in Mehring is a Roman estate on the Roman Wine Route in western Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. The villa was built as early as the 2nd century AD and underwent numerous alterations and additions throughout the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. With a floor area of 48 by 29 meters (158' by 95') and 34 rooms, it is one of the larger mansions in the entire area surrounding Augusta Treverorum (Trier).
The site of the villa had been known since the 19th century, but it was only between 1983 and 1987 that the mansion was uncovered, conserved and partially reconstructed. The main front with the corner risalites and the portico, a heated living room, and parts of the bath wing can be seen today.
Die Villa Rustica in Mehring ist ein römischer Gutshof an der Römischen Weinstraße im Westen von Rheinland-Pfalz. Die Villa wurde schon im 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr. erbaut und erfuhr zahlreiche Um- und Anbauten über das 3. und 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. hinweg. Mit einer Grundfläche von 48 mal 29 Meter und 34 Räumen gehört sie zu den größeren Herrenhäusern im gesamten Umland von Augusta Treverorum (Trier).
Die Fundstelle der Villa war schon seit dem 19. Jahrhundert bekannt, aber erst zwischen 1983 und 1987 wurde das Herrenhaus freigelegt, konserviert und teilweise rekonstruiert. Zu sehen sind heute die Hauptfront mit den Eckrisaliten und dem Portikus, ein beheizbarer Wohnraum und Teile des Badetraktes.
The Villa Urbana in Longuich on the Moselle is believed to have been the retirement home of a senior Roman official from nearby Augusta Treverorum (Trier). It was built in the 2nd century AD on the site of a villa rustica and had an extension of 110 by 28 meters (361' by 92'). The remains of the villa's walls were found in 1984. They were excavated, conserved and the buildings partially reconstructed.
Die Villa Urbana in Longuich an der Mosel war der Annahme nach der Alterssitz eines höheren römischen Beamten aus dem nahen Augusta Treverorum (Trier). Sie wurde im 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr. auf dem Grundstück einer Villa rustica erbaut und hatte eine Ausdehnung von 110 mal 28 Metern. Die Mauerreste der Villa wurden 1984 gefunden. Sie wurden ausgegraben, konserviert und die Gebäude teilweise rekonstruiert.
