Así obtuvo la jirafa su cuello / This is how the giraffe got its neck
Parecían niños porque jugaban como niños. Eran pequeños y hermosos también; y lo mejor que eran amigos. Para llegar más alto, el elefante estiraba su trompa. Para no dejarse intimidar, el pájaro volaba. Queriendo mover las nubes, el sapo cantaba al saltar. La jirafa no tenía trompa ni alas ni cantaba.
El juego se repetía cada mañana, cada tarde, el siguiente mes. ¡El elefante!, ¡el pájaro!, ¡el sapo! ¡la trompa!, ¡el vuelo!, ¡el salto cantando! Lo mismo cada mañana, cada tarde, el siguiente mes. La jirafa también hacía lo mismo.
Una tarde, el elefante miró a la jirafa, el pájaro miró al elefante y el sapo al pájaro. La jirafa seguía en lo suyo.
Otra tarde, fue el pájaro quien miró a la jirafa; ese día, el sapo siguió mirando al pájaro y el elefante miró al sapo. La jirafa, centrada.
Una tercera tarde, ya se imaginan quién miró a la jirafa, a quién el elefante y a quién el pájaro. También se imaginan lo de la jirafa.

La cuarta tarde se acabó la miradera y para sacar a la jirafa de concentración, la invitaron a jugar, le pidieron que adivinara ¿cuántas miradas había recibido cada uno en las tres tardes? La jirafa contestó que los tres quedaron empatados con dos miradas cada uno, pero que ella había ganado por diferencia de una.
El elefante, el pájaro y el sapo sacaron cuentas y en efecto dieron a favor de la jirafa, entonces, sin incluir a la jirafa, siguieron ¡de trompa!, ¡de vuelo! y de ¡salto cantando! porque no querían quedar empatados.
