A week ago, the 2020 Paralympic Games began in Tokyo, a sporting event that, like the Olympic Games, could not escape the shadow of the pandemic and had to be postponed for this year.

The Paralympic Games are the equivalent of the Olympic Games, with the clear distinction that in this sporting event athletes with special physical and mental conditions and capabilities compete, something that does not detract from their athletic abilities because the effort they put in each of the disciplines in which they compete is immense and extremely meritorious.

The Paralympic Games were held for the first time in Rome in 1960 and were born as an attempt of inclusion for people with special conditions, physical and mental conditions that often has made them victims of ridicule, attacks and discrimination by society that categorizes these people as "useless and incapable", something that the International Paralympic Committee has fought against by demonstrating that their athletes are as capable as those who enjoy perfect physical and mental health.

To my way of thinking, I believe that Paralympic athletes are true warriors and deserve all our admiration. They are capable of achieving great sporting merits regardless of the condition that afflicts them, and they also have to fight from a very young age against the prejudices of an insensitive society. With all this, these para-athletes overcome difficulties and prepare themselves in such a way that they are capable of reaching the Paralympic Games.

In Tokyo we have seen a true demonstration of discipline and sporting talent, every day new world records are set and the podiums are filled with para-athletes increasingly diverse in physical and mental conditions, which makes it clear that for sport we only need discipline and effort. On the other hand, we have seen how in these games empathy and companionship are the currency of exchange among the delegations, which clearly encourages and supports inclusion.

Our country is very well represented with a delegation of 26 para-athletes who are giving their best to leave the name of Venezuela at the top. From very early on our warriors gave us great joy, this time in the figures of Clara Fuentes, an athlete who competed in the discipline of weightlifting (Parapowerlifting) and with only 24 years of age managed to get the first bronze medal for the country in these games. Clara came in third place by lifting 97 kg, behind Indonesia's para-athlete who lifted 98 kg and China's para-athlete who lifted 108 kg.

The next athlete to give us one more joy through her silver medal was Lisbeli Vera, this girl of only 19 years of age with her mark of 57.32 seconds got the second place in the category of 400 meters T47 being only behind the current world champion, an exemplary and wonderful participation. Lisbeli still has 2 more races to run, so the medal hopes are still alive for this magnificent para-athlete.

Oriana Terán was another Venezuelan athlete who made us proud to be the first representative to get a Paralympic diploma for our delegation in these games, she did it in the discipline of Powerlifting in the 45 kg category.

Undoubtedly one cannot feel more than proud with the participation of all these athletes who day by day fight against themselves to be better and better and to be able to represent us. It is incredible how many people without any kind of condition are consumed by a sedentary lifestyle, while these athletes put aside any disability they have to put the greatest of efforts and dedicate their lives to sport, something very admirable indeed.
