Mexican Murals - Across from Bella Época [CCC's Street Art Contest #48]

Sometimes the best places to find cool murals are on the same walls that had been painted before. Such is the case with the Casa Picnic, which changes its huge mural periodically, but since they've been also getting increasingly commercial, I stopped visiting them. For real, I don't want to add to the popularization of a German semi-luxury vehicle. Not in my Mexican Murals series, and also not for the CCC's Street Art Contest, to which I have become a regular contributor. Check it out, by the way, we're at the 48th edition!

However, some walls are simply made for murals, and the people in charge over them know it too. So they keep inviting artists to turn it into something worth beholding, as is the case with this corner on the streets Benjamin Hill and Ave. Tamaulipas in the Condesa neighborhood of Mexico City. And yes, I've presented a mural from here before. This corner is quite well known for the Centro Cultural Bella Época, a cultural center which includes a huge bookstore, a cinema, and an art gallery. Though the mural is just on the opposite corner, I could see how the two are linked.

From Top To Bottom

Again, due to the slim nature of this corner wall, the painting includes various images stacked vertically. So let's take a close look, starting at the top.

After the sponsors of the piece, there is an interesting design that may look like some eyes from the distance, but up close it is clearly an embryo in a womb, above the phases of the moon. Below that there is an actual eye, surrounded by leaves or feathers, and the sponsor's logo. Again these Germans!

In the middle section of the mural what we may actually see is the artist herself, Adry Balbo. The profile fits: painter and muralist from Mexico, and she even looks like the lady in her picture. The imagery all around her includes more embryos, feathers, and artistic imagery of possibly performing artists.

Since the bottom of the mural is closest to what people can see, she included a number of interesting elements here: There's a dog, a red peacock, a book and a piano (can't be missed in a cultural center), some natural elements in form of a mountain peak and some flowers, and a pair of old-fashioned roller skates. Don't look at her sneakers, though! I bet that's exactly what the Germans want! Instead, check out the entire piece from close-up:
