STREET ART #90 - A mural with a deeper meaning (Kristiansand, Norway)

DSC_01.JPG

A farm building I pass several times a week, had suddenly turned pink! A couple of days later, the wall had a summer motif with bees and a dandelion. The artist is Vlekart (Terje Andersen). First after a few days I realized that the motif on this particular farm has a symbolic meaning.

The farmhouse belongs to Jegersberg Gård. This farm has since 2007 functioned as a rehabilitation center for drug addicts. The treatment takes place completely without medication. It is the residents who run the farm, who have both chickens, horses etc. They run their own equestrian center and a cafe as well.

Many children and young people who have been exposed to neglect, violence and abuse during childhood, will too often experience mental and social problems later in life. Research shows that approx. 1/3 of these are doing reasonably well despite their poor upbringing conditions. These children who manage are often referred to as "dandelion children" (a popular social professional term – at least in Norway). That's why they are compared to the dandelion – a plant that has the ability to survive and flourish even in the most difficult places. The motif Vlekart has chosen for this building makes a lot of sense when I think about it.
