Candid portraits, some pros and cons :)

Like it or not, I think everyone who loves photography sooner or later starts shooting people. In the good, visual way, I mean, with their cameras :D

So friends and relatives are the first we start with, usually. Later on, some go to studios and try pro level lighting equipment. I use to manage a photo studio for some time and I did several photo-shoots for private and corporate clients. It takes some time to learn to "harness" the light but probably the greatest aspect about working in a studio is the control. Usually you have the time and liberty to do virtually everything :)

Some people, however, dive into the deep waters by bringing their cameras right into the streets and trying the famous street photography. I have to admit, from my perspective, I've done it few times. While I love some of the results, I think that isn't my thingy. I tried the two different approaches here: the candid and the consensual :)

Despite what you may guess here, both of them could actually get you in trouble. Especially in countries where the culture isn't a top priority and photographers are considered as some impudent people who just stick their noses where they shouldn't :) Using the consensual approach gives you some liberty to have more photos though and probably catch different emotions and tell a longer story, however the sincerity and "honesty" of the moment is usually lost.

I believe the best street photographs are candid ones. They allow us to catch those micro-expressions that usually tell the real story. Of course, we have a very narrow window to use the camera and after that it is all gone. So here, the practice and rehearsals are quite important.

Now few examples to illustrate my thoughts and just for entertainment :)
Some of these people I know, some of these people (and the one-eyed cat, LOLOL) I don't.
