Located at kilometer 12 of the road leading to El Moján, on the border of the Mara and Maracaibo municipalities, it was declared a metropolitan park by the State Government on June 12, 1968.

It has an extension of 2200 hectares and is the richest natural reservoir in biodiversity in the region. In the same there are fish and seafood such as palometas, curvinas, shrimps, robalitos, crabs, cachamas, viejitas and tilapias that are prohibited to fish them, it is also the habitat of diverse species of birds like white, gray herons, corocoros, ducks, sparrow hawks, pelicans, ducks, sea crows and the most representative of the park the pink flamingos, which come every year in October, from Central America, and stay two months while the winter passes. s and there are four types of mangroves: red, white, black and botoncito; their names depend on the coloration of the leaves and their trunks.

It has 7 islets, 2 of more or less 2 kms of extension, one of them called zapato or of the children, where the visitors can make stops to explore and the other 5 are mangrove clusters that do not have firm land.

It has a dock where visitors, accompanied by guides arranged for such purposes, can take paddleboats along its entire length, also camps are organized for high schools, private companies and the general public.

There is also a canoeing school that depends on the Regional Sports Institute of the state of Zulia, through which children as young as 8 years old learn this sport and is a place where municipal, regional and national competitions of this sport are held.

It has a maximum depth of 60 to 80 centimeters and owes its name to the Guajira Indians, who call this way to the red and black seeds that are expelled by the mangroves that abound in the place and are used to make necklaces and bracelets that are used to avoid the evil eye, diseases and certain curses.

Besides being a natural reservoir of fresh water, protected by the Ministry of People's Power for the Environment, it is a place where families enjoy contact with nature, the sea breeze and a pleasant moment of tranquility. In its extension is the planetarium.
