I came across a contest in the crossculture official page which is titled - CROSSCULTURE CONTEST: WHAT IS THE BIGGEST HOLIDAY HONOURED IN YOUR COUNTRY || 4000 HIVE DELEGATION PRIZE and I will be joining the contest by sharing with you all one of the biggest cultural holiday/festival that takes place annually in Nigeria.
Like I have always emphasized on how Nigeria is blessed with so much cultural heritage and traditions, one platform that has been organized to showcase the culture of Nigerians is The Calabar Festival and Carnival. The Calabar Festival and Carnival has been nicknamed "Africa Biggest Street Party" and it welcomes visitors from all part of the World. Both foreign and local participants are always present at the event and celebrities from the movie industry, music industry, fashion industry as well as notable government officials are always present at the event.
The Calabar Festival and Carnival is a festival that holds every year starting from the 1st of December and runs through to the last day of the year, that is, 31st of December. It is hosted by the State Government of Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, which is a State in the South East of Nigeria. Unarguably, Calabar Cross River State in Nigeria has proven itself to be the top on the list of the tourist attractions and destinations for Nigerians and for people from all over the world.
There are various activities scheduled from the first day to the last day of the festival. There are street parties and games where people are dressed in beautiful costumes, art shows and exhibitions, food competitions and exhibitions as well where you get to have a bite of different local and international cuisine. Also, there are traditional dances and music from different cultures, bands and music/dance groups. One of the eye-catching features of the festival is the beautiful costumes, outfits, decorations that is seen everywhere throughout the course of the 31day festival.
Truth be told, I have not attended the festival but it is on my wish list and I wish to tick the box soon. The festival always have a 24/7 dedicated channel on the TV where people who are not present can follow all the action and activities without missing out. That is to show you how important, popular and exciting it is for a channel to be dedicated to it for 24 hours a day for the 31 days.
Apart from the fun and pleasure derived from the festival, it is also a means of generating revenue for the state from the high influx of people visiting the state at the period from the different states across the country, and from all over the world. The hospitality industry would be all smiles for that month because many people will be lodging in hotels, the food business owners too would have high sales as well as the fashion designers, so many people would be sewing and buying costumes.
