The Lord of the Rings left us a very big void; such was that hole in our heart that multiple stories based on Tolkien's middle earth began to spread. Dwarves, elves, orcs, wizards, and magical creatures - all that would catch any fantasy-loving reader! However, at some point the redundancy of that universe began to tire many. Martín, unlike Tolkien, decided to go for something a little newer; this time, the magic moved to a much more distant plane to be replaced by political conflicts, betrayals, unexpected deaths and bitter endings.
El señor de los anillos nos dejó un vacío muy grande; tal fue ese hoyo en nuestro corazón que múltiples historias basadas en la tierra media de Tolkien comenzaron a difundirse. Game Of Thrones, the first title of his saga "A Song of Ice and Fire", starts as the antithesis of a fantastic world; We look at Westeros, a continent where dynastic houses have lived through a long period of peace after a bloody rebellion fueled by love and promise. The novel is structured in different points of view, where the Stark family takes an immediate role. Martin's perception of generating conflicts and assassinating important figures shows us the raw nature of the Middle Ages, a time where wars were felt like the heartbeat itself. The theme is much more adult and political, leading the reader to enter a very complex universe. No one is safe in this game of power and glory, because the character that paints the most for a hero can end up without his head on his shoulders.
La novela se encuentra estructurada en diversos puntos de vista, donde la familia Stark cobra un protagonismo inmediato. La percepción de Martin para generar conflictos y asesinar personajes importantes nos muestra la naturaleza cruda del Medievo, una época donde las guerras se palpaban como los propios latidos del corazón. La temática es mucho más adulta y política, conduciendo al lector a adentrarse en un universo muy complejo. Nadie está a salvo en este juego de poder y gloria, pues el personaje que más pinta para héroe puede terminar sin la cabeza sobre sus hombros.
I read the book after seeing the first season of the series, and was really impressed by the similarity between the adaptation of the script and that of the novel. But, if it comes to choosing, I'll take the book; And it is that the genius of Martin allows us to know the deepest nature of his characters. No one is a complete villain, and neither is a hero to follow. The neutrality of the protagonists leads us to know the darker side of their human nature. At first, the multiple points of view make the reading somewhat confusing, however, the prose is so addictive that little by little you manage to connect enough dots to understand the events of the past and the present that are mixed in a single conflict.
Leí el libro luego de ver la primera temporada de la serie, y realmente me impresionó la similitud entre la adaptación del guión y la de la novela. Pero, si de elegir se trata, me quedo con el libro; Y es que la genialidad de Martin nos permite conocer la naturaleza más profunda de sus personajes. Nadie es un villano completo, y tampoco un héroe a seguir. La neutralidad de los protagonistas nos lleva a conocer el lado más sombrío su naturaleza humana. Al principio, los múltiples puntos de vista hacen que la lectura sea algo confusa, no obstante, la prosa es tan adictiva que poco a poco logras atar los cabos suficientes para entender los eventos del pasado y el presente que se mezclan en un solo conflicto.
I always recommend reading the books who have seen the series; But ultimately, of the five novels that Martin has managed to finish in this saga of fire and ice, "Game Of Thrones" is and will be my favorite, because the rest are either too painful or they end up stretching a plot that seems to have no more an obvious ending as the television series had (a regrettable issue because of the unpleasant ending it had). But it should be noted that this first story of the thrones, conspiracies, dragons and the dead was a before and after in fantasy. Here, the real magic lies in the political environment, the tensions and the unexpected deaths that undoubtedly moved more than one.
Siempre recomiendo leer los libros al que ha visto la serie; pero en definitiva, de las cinco novelas que Martin ha logrado terminar de esta saga de fuego y hielo, “Game Of Thrones” es y será mi favorito, porque el resto o son demasiados dolorosos o terminan por estirar más una trama que parece no tener un final evidente como lo tuvo la serie de televisión (cuestión lamentable por el desagradable final que tuvo). Pero hay que destacar que esta primera historia de los tronos, las conspiraciones, los dragones y los muertos supuso un antes y un después en la fantasía. Aquí, la verdadera magia reside en el entorno político, las tensiones y las inesperadas muertes que sin duda, conmovieron a más de uno.

George R. R. Martín is a prominent science fiction and fantasy novel writer. His early works showed us galactic travel and the destruction of planets, framing love as a fundamental premise. But his success would not come until 2001, 4 years after the publication of what would be his most successful novel "Game Of Thrones" in the A Song of Ice and Fire saga. However, the slowness of the author to write his novels is what has caused that, 24 years later, his saga of books has not yet concluded. And because of the winds that blow, colder than spring, the end is far from coming ... at least for the next few years.
