Current Event. August 15, 2021. The Taliban Take Over Afghanistan

After 20 years of American intervention in Afghanistan, which started after the 9/11 attacks, the Taliban, who were ousted from power in 2001, have made their return. Today they have taken control of the Presidential Palace and are about to declare an "Islamic Emirate".

This event was surprising for how fast it developed. The Afghan Army, which was supposed to contain and pacify the whole country, did not even put a fight. The current situation unfolded so rapidly that has left many Americans stranded in the embassy and looking for a way out.

We are yet to see, how the balance of power is going to be distributed in the region. The influence of the US definitely will decline. The Afghan government that was left was supposed to respond to the US interests. We are yet to see if this plays in China's advantage, since Afghanistan is in Central Asia and connects South Asia and the Far East.
