Queso y vidrio: dos polos | Cheese and glass: two poles #Chronos

English version

1995 was a year of great turns in my life. After a wonderful run of work with my production company, a divorce left me without it, without clients, without a job, without a car and without money. In a condescending manner, the person who put me in such a position, allowed me to live in an apartment of her own, for a certain period of time (although I wasn't told about the certainty either).

In this way I spent several months in which I could not find a way to get my life back on track. I practically went back to depending on the support that my parents gladly gave me, but that I avoided as much as possible.

My group, Los Cañoneros, due to the success of the production company, had been relegated to the background, it was not active and it was going to take a long time to reactivate it.

The first job I managed to get was to play in a night club, one day a week. It was a special Venezuelan music show, together with my sister -who had already made nightclubs her field of work- which consisted of a 45-minute show on Fridays.

Of course, such a tiny working day had an economic compensation that, although it was good for me, was just as tiny.

Survival became part of my routine and I trained myself in the arts of magic, with a view to yielding food. Although I must confess that life, despite the whole scenario, sometimes gave me surprising gifts.

So it happened with one of the gifts from my parents, who did some food shopping and brought it to me. Among that was a package of sliced cheese, the kind they call Paisa type. Of course, with almost a kilogram of weight, I had the need to "yield" that cheese as much as possible, but with a drawback: I didn't have a refrigerator!

After a few days, I realized that the cheese had started to grow fungus. In that situation, it was too painful to throw it away, so I put it aside. Several more days went by, until I decided to throw it away. But when I checked it, I realized that the fungus on it was blue. I decided to remove the plastic wrap and suddenly the atmosphere was impregnated with the smell of that cheese, but it was not that of a damaged cheese, it smelled like blue cheese, like Roquefort. So with trepidation I decided to try some and it was not only the smell, but also the taste was that of the famous French invention.

I guess at some point, in the store, it must have come in contact with blue cheese and the fungus attached itself to it and then, during storage, it had a chance to reproduce. So instead of ending up as garbage, it became a delicacy that I was able to enjoy for several more days.

But this "goodness" was not permanent and there was a day when I fell into such a level of depression that I could hardly get out of bed. I decided that I needed to give myself a little treat, to lift my spirits. Since there was nothing to eat I went downstairs to shop with the little money I had. Across the street was the store where I used to buy groceries and right next door was a small liquor store.

As I passed in front of the liqueurs store I saw that the brand of rum of my preference, which I had not drunk for some time, was on sale. The price was right for the amount of money I had, but if I bought the rum, I would run out of food. So I continued on and went into the other store, but I kept thinking on "braked little horse" (it is the image that accompanies that brand and people call it this way). So I couldn't decide to order anything, I had already seen what I could take, but I couldn't make up my mind. I left the store and went to the liquor store and from there I went back again. Two hours passed in that journey and indecision, with the dilemma: eat or give me a little joy.

The sun had started to go down and the approaches to El Valle, the area where I lived, began to decrease the flow of pedestrians. I understood that if I didn't make a decision, I was not going to have either of the two alternatives. So I finally said to myself: well, it's all about brightening up your life a bit, you'll eat tomorrow! I went into the liquor store, asked for my bottle of rum, they put it in a small plastic bag, I handed over all my capital and crossed the street to go up to the apartment.

As I lived on a high floor, I pressed the button to call the elevator and with a smile on my lips and my heart slightly accelerated, I was ready to wait for it.

Suddenly I felt the bag I was carrying in my hand get lighter and heard the sound of glass breaking. But those signs didn't make me think of anything bad, it was only when I looked down that I could see the broken bottle on the floor and the yellow liquid dispersing, as did my smile.

The elevator door opened and I didn't have the courage to do what was right, which was to pick up the sharp fragments of the dream lying on the floor. I just entered the car, marked the floor, the door closed and as I was going up, a couple of tears came down from my eyes, as a sign of the end of that day.
