Hello Hivers, here is the second part.

THE DIVISION OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY

The PCV split, on the one hand Gustavo and Eduardo Machado, Luis Miquilena, Salvador de la Plaza, Rodolfo Quintero, Carlos Augusto León, among others. They were the "Macha-Miqui". On the other hand, Juan Bautista Fuenmayor, "Rolito" Martínez, Jesús Faría, Ernesto Silva Tellería, Fernando Key Sánchez and others were the so-called "Bobitos". In the centre, the so-called "Grupo NO", made up of Miguel Otero Silva, Eduardo Gallegos Mancera, Pedro Ortega, Guillermo Mujica, Pedro Esteban Mejías, and a few others.

It was a stormy split. Eloy, Juan Molina and I aligned ourselves with the Machados and Miquilena. I was an alternate on the Central Committee and was elevated to principal and then promoted to the Political Bureau.

Gustavo Machado was put in charge of the weekly Unidad.

The other group kept... Here it is! I accompanied Gustavo in this venture. As he used to say, I was his right-hand man. We would go into the workshop, we would "impose the pages", we were editors and proofreaders.

"Cucú" Corao, who became the administrator of "El Nacional", seeing the constraints of my work schedule and my political activity, offered me to be office manager at Industrias Wikora´s, a company based in San Agustín del Sur, owned by his brother Víctor Corao. I accepted at the end of 1944. With Victor Corao I learned a lot about industrial and commercial work. Those were intense months: work, the Party, the newspaper Unidad, my links with San Juan and my home. By then two daughters were born: Tania and Natacha.

Political life revolved around Medina, who was supported first by the united PCV, then, with nuances, by the three factions: Macha-Miqui, Fuenmayor and the Grupo No. These nuances were very marked among the Macha-Miqui and Fuenmayor. "Rolito" Martinez had launched the slogan which his comrades took up, "With Medina, against reaction" and a qualification which increased the controversy when he pointed out that "Medina was a find of history".

In the international communist movement, at the end of the Second World War, the theories of class conciliation put forward by Earl Browder on "Class Conciliation" appeared with great force throughout America, which in essence was a reformism that avoided the class struggle, that exacerbated the policies of national unity maintained as a result of the alliance of the USA, Britain and the Soviet Union. The Browderism, it was evident, clashed with basic principles of Marxism. In Venezuela, these theses were uncritically taken up by the Fuenmayor group, which in turn translated into a policy of followerism towards Medina, as we pointed out earlier.

This debate was given a definitive twist by an intervention by the internationally respected French communist leader Jacque Douclos.

This material by Douclos was translated by Gustavo Machado and published as a political scoop in Unidad, which had a profound repercussion within the Venezuelan communists. Incidentally, in January 1956, on my way to Moscow, Manuel Caballero managed to arrange for me to meet this French communist leader in Paris, which he recounted in a biographical note he wrote about me after the formation of MAS. (Movimiento al Socialismo)

These theses on national unity in the Fuenmayor-Martínez version translated into how to conceive social struggles against the Medina government. This allowed the opposition in the streets to be led by Acción Democrática, acquiring great influence among the workers. The Macha-Miquis, who dominated the bus and tram workers, and some oil unions in the East, tried to challenge AD's presence in these struggles. But it is undeniable that AD won important positions in the workers' and peasants' movement.
